I listen to a lot of audiobooks, with having to spend a lot of time on the motorway. I've gone through the entire works of Harry Harrison, J.K Rowling, Jim Butcher, Patrick Rothfuss and Terry Pratchett.

I've just finished the latest work of Pratchett, Raising Steam, this morning and now I'm stuck for ideas.

Can anybody recommend me series worth getting into?
I mainly like fantasy or sci-fi novels, but I'm open to suggestions.

Have you tried podcasts?

I got into them last March, with the Joe Rogan Experience being the primary source. Each is around 3hrs long and he has a wide variety of people on (Neil DeGrase Tyson, Shane Smith (from Vice Magazine), Jason Silva, Kevin Smith to name but a few).

From there I've clocked on to lots of other podcasts, you might like "The Nerdist" if you are into Fantasy/Sci-Fi as they have a lot of authors, comic book artists, actors and video game developers from that genre on - I listened to a G.R.R Martin one last week.

Speaking of G.R.R - hows about the Game of Thrones audiobooks?

Podcasts work for me as its conversation so I don't have to invest my imagination into it, but I could never get on with audiobooks, as I can read 20x faster than the guy whos talking, and when I read I draw a mental imagery of whats going on and think about the interaction of characters and so on.....this is great laying in bed or on the sofa, not so much doing 50 down the dual carriageway on two wheels. So my travel audio is 90% podcast, 10% music these days.

The Wheel Of Time - Robert Jordan.

Should keep you occupied for a few weeks.

Also look at Brandon Sanderson's stuff, the Mistborn series is good.

Is 'classic' Sci Fi ok?
A lot of Heinlein's stuff is available on audio book.
Philip K Dick and John Wyndham while a bit more modern Vernor Vinge, and Neal Stephenson - all authors I like available on audio books.
Recently listed to The Postman by David Brin, To Your Scattered Bodies Go by Philip Jose Farmer, The Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison and The Lathe of Heaven be Ursula K Le Guin all of which I liked.

Orson Scott Card's Ender's game series too - not a fan myself, but have listened to most of them.

The Stainless Steel Rat was one of the series I demolished, I think I read most of them in paper form aaaaages ago too, my dad has quite a collection of old yellowy-brown paged sci-fi novels from the mid 70's.

I really wish I'd made this thread early, I've got quite a bit of stuff to look at now!

Oh yeah done all three Robin Hobb trilogies too Really liked those, they were much darker than most novels.

I just looked it up because I know there's another one coming out and there's five one isn't related to the same world though. It's the Rain Wilds Chronicles I've missed.

Just remembered I've gone through seven books by Trudi Canavan too in her Kyralia series.

Surely not...

It's amazing just how many tv adaptations have been announced too, following the Game of Thrones sensation. Looks like they might do one for The Kingkiller Chronicles and there's only been two of the planned nine books actually written so far.

The Dune series (by Frank Herbert) will keep you occupied for a good while. Really good books too. Takes a little time to get used to them but once you do they are amazing.

I did once start the Dark Tower series, but never really got into it. I think I actually have the Dune audiobooks too, it's just a matter of finding them!

"We're Alive" is a pretty good podcast drama. It's been running awhile, and has nearly finished, but the beauty of that is you can download it in its entirety and listen to the episodes back to back without having to wait a week or two like I have.

The only annoying thing are the sponsor ads at the start and end of each episode nowadays but I suppose it's those which have kept it free.

Anyway, rather than read out prose it is acted, with sound effects, etc., so it's enjoyable and easy to get immersed in.

Providing you can get your hands on the unabridged versions, I quite enjoyed the Artemis Fowl audiobooks. Same target age as the Harry Potter's (i.e. 'young adult') but still rather fun.
