Are there any particular brands or helmets known to be good at higher speeds?

Shark make a helmet called the Speed R witch they claim is good for riders on naked bikes. Anyone know if this is true or just marketing bolloks.

What do you consider to be "higher speeds"?

Profile is important. The streamline shape of aggressively styled sports helmets gives less wind resistance. My Shoei XR1100 is great at speed. Check out the shapes in any helmet display - the more bulbous ones are better for touring and the sleeker profile types, more suited to cutting through the wind. A good seal is important. Generally cheaper helmets are more likely to be noisy. However comfort in my book is what really matters. We cannot test ride helmets unfortunately so personal recommendation is all we have really got.

What do you mean better?

Less wind noise?

More aerodynamic?

Visor doesn't flip up.

Weight?

My Shark RSR2 is light and feels more pointy than a cheaper RGV helmet. Pointy might be more aerodynamic.

Noise doesn't matter because at speed you ought to wear plugs.

Helmets with good seals sound quieter from the inside so in effect appear more efficient.

Mach 1 and above ( at sea level obviously ).

Seriously, 70mph and above the "nipping on zone".

I've got a bell m4r carbon helmet, quiet as a mouse, never wear plugs, comfiest helmet I've ever had too. Only use my bike for fun really so it's well tested! Only downside is its fairly pricey

My XR1000 is better for long distance than my Arai RX7 GP.

The Arai is better in that it's vents work really well, and you get more vision, but it's slightly heavier and seems to create a bit more drag than the XR1000 does, it's also far noisier. This makes the RX7 sound crap and it isn't. It's just not as good as a touring helmet than the Shoei. If it was really hot, or for the track I'd take my Arai in a heart beat.

How do you get on with the different fits? I can't get my fat head in an Arai which would imply the Shoei is a bit of a looser all round fit on your bonce?

Not much in it really. The XR1000 fits me extremely well. The Arai is a little tighter around the crown (not uncomfortable really, but still bedding it in), but it is heaps tighter around the base of the helmet. Again this could just be that it's still bedding in.

XR1100 doesn't fit me at all, and neither does the X Spirit 2, as these were what I originally went out looking for, but Shoei have changed the shape of head they cater for, so I had to defect.

Ah, maybe the 1000 is slightly narrower, I only tried the 1100.

in the past it was known that people had either an arai or shoei shaped head, and all was rosy, then shoei decided they wanted a bite of arai's market so changed them to fit like arai's and lost some of their old customers

when trying on a shoei, it's best to pull it on from the rear forwards instead of the usual straight down from above, as the back of the helmet is curved to match the shape of the human skull

My Scorpion Exo 500 is quite a lot quieter than the HJC FG 15 it replaced.

A helmet that fits you well, to start with - if it doesn't fit you well, it won't be good regardless of the rest of the quality.

I've had Shoei's at 150mph on a naked bike and an indicated 180mph sitting up at the braking point on a faired bike and they've been fine.

AGV GP Pista or AGV GP Corsa are designed for highspeed which reduce the amount of turbulence and head bob.

Very expensive though

Can't help you with recommendation, but one you may want to avoid is the AGV K4. Crazy loud wind noise once over 40-50mph. At 50mph my bike is drowned out by wind noise. At 70mph I need ear plug to prevent tinnitus, even after short rides. Reasonable helmet otherwise.

It's a tricky one, as wind noise and aerodynamics just can't be gauged when trying lids on in the shop. The first shop to have a changing room with a wind tunnel will surely make a killing.

Getting a chin flap insert helps with noise considerably too

ive been using my Speed - R for the best part of a year now. has good ventilation and is relatively quiet.

i get a bit of wobble when im around 140(private roads of course), however on my old Street triple the helmet was great considering i had no wind protection whatsoever.

only bad points i would say is the helmet is quite large in size and because of the fins at the back it forces the air down your back, and if you have a backpack on it makes a flappy sound.

sun visor is alright, tinted/extra visors are quite expensive though.

would definately recommend it.

I have found Arai to be the only make of helmet that doesn't push my nose against the inside of my visor at high speed. High speed = 130mph+ for the purposes of this. Current one is a condor I think.

Oddly, I do get it forming a vacuum inside the helmet at very high speeds (so say, 145+) in combination with my fairing meaning I can't breathe. Some weird venturi effect I suspect.

I was getting that at 90+. Was weird like I was having to force myself to breath. Breathing in was ok then breathing out was like my breath was being sucked from my body.
