The writer seems like backpacker detritus who stumbled in to a fairly standard job, and made a pigs arse of it before leaving.

Rolling Eyes

The facts may be true, but his interpretation is pretty shallow.

Ok, possibly more to it, but I still suspect the 'mormon one' was a bullshitter.

But yes, the rich are so inhumanly rich in most of Asia that it does sicken me. Hence, learn the local language, make friends with poor people. If they're speaking great English, they usually had a rich upbringing (and as such, a warped perception of reality).

A guy who takes (and develops) passport photos at the health centre I went to today (to get my health check for a Taiwan visa) was obviously not rich... but we got chatting, and he invited me to have a go in his microlite one weekend Thumbs Up

I'll agree with him that living in that way would have sucked though. I doubt he was a real gangster, just the rich people aren't that far removed from gangsters anyway. But he would have got a position of power, and grabbed/stole from there.

We have a saying here;

"In the west, money gets you power. In China, power gets you money."

Yeah I thought it was just some gap yah type too. I can't see why he'd lie though, plus the article had pictures of where he was.

Either way, quite an interesting story and certainly reveals the insane wealth of some people. That way of life is surely a fairly global thing though - plenty of uber rich living gated lives doing what they want!
