So many gloves seem to have minimal protection on the palm but have hard knuckle protection. When you get sent sliding down the tarmac, are you supposed to turned your hands over so the knuckle protector scrapes along the floor as opposed to using your palm (as instinct would dictate)?

If you have them on your palms you wouldn't be able to grip the throttle properly.

Anyway, have you seen that vid of the c90 rider vs the chav? Cool

In a high speed crash you might be rolling over and over and the back of your hand could slap into tarmac?

Knuckles are pretty sensitive so makes sense to have armour there even if seems unlikely.
Not an option with palms as need the dexterity.

This man speaks the truth.

That said, this is a picture of Capirossi's gloves after he broke a load of bones in his hand.

https://www.prc.it/pag/album%20carbon/Capirossi.jpg

Both are like boxing gloves with heaps of soft armour/padding, and very little hard armour, so go figure.

If your palm hits the deck first it flips you on your back, that's what I was told. I have not managed to test this theory out yet but when I do I will let you know if the theory is correct.

My mates' 'knuckle dusters' came in handy when he got knocked off his bike at speed on a roundabout, as he slid up the bonnet, his fist went through the windscreen and smashed the 'blind' driver in the face - thus busting his nose.

Bit of rough justice. Probably wouldn't have been as effective without the protection. Cool

When your hands are subjected to pain or an impact you subconsciously make a fist (generally speaking), meaning palm paddings not much use but makes sense to protect the outside, knuckles are the sharpest corner so need covering Thumbs Up

As above with the added bonus of helping to keep your knuckles warm.

Well...... mine do.

I smushed a knuckle socket and dislocated a finger due to wearing gardening gloves on a bike when I crashed. I have no idea what my hand hit but proper gloves would have saved it.

I had a big off and landing from what seemed like a great height on my chest. At some point while sliding along the tarmac the backs of my gloves must have been in contact as there was significant abrasive damage to the knuckle protectors.

Didn't stop me getting a Bennetts Fracture of the thumb or 6 broken ribs and a punctured lung though Sad

Mine also protect my knuckles from stones throw up by vehicles in front. Without it the impact may make for interesting countersteer.

I have had several stones hit my hands during an enduro.Luckily my race gloves have good protection

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Snaps/20091013_2.jpg

But the palms have minimal protection

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Snaps/20091013_3.jpg

But when this happened

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes187.jpg

I went over the handlebars and slid along the road with my hands and arms in front of my chest. My knuckles suffered quite a bit due to wearing wrist length thin skinned leather gloves.I still have the scars today, even though the accident was 22 years ago Thumbs Down

When I come off I slid with the backs of my hands on the floor, knuckle protectors took all of it

You're assuming people will slide on their front in the event of a crash.

To knock cyclists out when they're in your way. I suppose they'd protect your knuckles as an added bonus as well.

I always thought that it was just a helpful aid to have carbon fibre knuckles when entering into aggressive negotiations over which party was at fault in case of an accident.

I have a pair of KNOX zero (outdry) gloves and they have knuckle protectors and a plastic disk where the spongy part of the underside of your hand goes to help you slide on your hand rather than buckle your wrist so they have the best of both worlds. oh and wrist protectors too Thumbs Up
