PostPosted: 22:36 - 04 Jan 2005    Post subject: Another nail in my back tyre... Reply with quote

I've had a nail in my back tyre since April last year. It has never caused me any problems so i've just left it in there. However i got another nail in my tyre tonight in the carpark where i work.

I got home an inspected my tyre to find a nail sticking about an inch out of my rear tyre. It does not seem to have a head on it, so it must have entered my tyre head first (its only a thin nail).

I wiggled it around and it is slowly leaking air, however im going to try and ride it the 4 miles to college tomorow. Is this a good idea?

If it has gone flat overnight, i will bring a pump with me to college just in case it goes flat during the day.

This pisses me off as i do not want to get the bus...

Ive probably made this post much longer than it should be Embarassed but anyway; Should i take any extra caution riding to college tomorow? And am i doing a wise thing riding it with a punchure?

Cheers

(PS, i have used some plyers to cut the nail down in size, but it still remains in my tyre...)

I wouldn't advise riding it to college like that, what if you have a blowout while your riding and end up face first into someone's bonnet?

Do you have a bike shop closer than that?

You should be able to get it fixed for around a tenner.

My nearest shop is in Dartford. Thats also about 4 miles from my house.

When you say 'fixed' what do you mean? Plugged up? To be honest the tyre needs replacing anyway, but i reeealy dont want to get the bus tomorow so i may just take the speedy anyways...

If your in Bexleyheath then how about Aye-Gee's? or Garozzo in Blackfen. EC Bates is probably the one your on about in Dartford. That's all I can think of. Best to get it fixed ASAP, just turn up late for college and get a tyre fitted in the morning, scrounge off your parents if ya need too Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Im very close to Bexley Heath (Im in Erith). I've heard of Aye-Gee's but where is it exactly? And yeah i think the shop in Dartford is bates.

Roughly how much will it cost to replace the tyre completely and is it a 10 minute job?

Cheers

For Aye-Gee's get to Crook Log swimming pool's or the Bexleyheath Broadway. Just head straight along the road into London/towards Shooters Hill. Once youve gone through welling (past Hein Gericke) further up will be a shop on the left/on a funny corner. Right after a Blockbuster. Probably just as quick for you to get to the Dartford one tbh.

It was in the carpark where i work at Wickes, so i suppose theres bound to be a few nails lying around Confused

Reuben, i thought Aye-Gee's had closed down. Confused Is it the big shop on the corner with glass windows the whole way round it?

Yep they did close down. Then was totally re-opened under new ownership. Worht going down just to look at the Ducati (think 996 maybe 998) with polished wheels Cool the MV F4 and Benelli Tornado in the Window. They sell part's for all makes and Suzuki bike's too. Thumbs Up
Yes it's that shop with the big glass window round it, opposite Blockbuster's!

Do you have a halfords near by. If you do, get a can of tyre weld. All you do is let your tyre down so its flat.
Put the tube on your valve, and press the cap down (Like an aerosol can)
keep going until your tyre is the pressure you want it to be and spin your back wheel.
Leave for 10 minutes before you ride and tadaaaa. You have an invincible rear tyre.

But its only good for a hundred miles or so. I had my rear speedfight tyre like this for about a year and it didnt cause a problem but id hate to think you have had a blow out cos of me Confused

<|Binge|>

(Im lucky, Ive got 4 spair wheels + tyres piled up in my garage Laughing Only problem is they are yellow and white ...)

Don't bother with all that expensive crap if you only want to use the bike for a few miles.
Just pull the nail out and replace it with a screw, It needs to be slightly thicker than the nail to seal the leak. just screw it in and pump the tyre back up. It will stay up long enough so that you can get a new tyre or a repair.

I always carry a couple of different size screws around for a emergency repair.

Its a lot safer than riding around with half a nail sticking out the tyre and cheaper than tyreweld (also bear in mind some garages charge to clean the tyreweld out of the rim)

Oh yea IT ONLY WORKS WITH TUBELESS TYRES!
