PostPosted: 20:00 - 30 Mar 2014    Post subject: Accident with no CBT Reply with quote

I've done something a bit silly, I was convinced that my CBT finished in April and I was involved in an accident last week. A lady pulled out in front of me and I got knocked off. She admitted liability and there were police there that witnessed the accident.

I know this is hopeful, but I don't suppose anyone knows if insurance or police would give a "grace period" or something as my cbt was only 10 days out at the time of the accident? (Wishful thinking I know!!!)

Does anyone know whether the third party's insurance company would ask to see my cbt if I didn't make a claim?

It was only when I was checking through my paperwork and realised that I had misplaced my certificate, and then when I checked, I realised how stupid it was assuming it finished in April.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You fucked. There is no such thing as grace periods, it was 10 days out. That will invalidate your insurance as well.

I would imagine declaring it would cause you a world of problems. But I'm not sure they'd request your certificate without having a suspicion first.

Could always get it re-done quickly.

If they don't ask, you don't tell.

If they ask, you don't tell.

Insurers are not the police. Just stonewall.

I was involved in two non fault RTC's while on my CBT. I claimed from the other parties insurance on both occasions and their insurance companies never asked me to produce any documents to them.

However, as the police were involved I had to produce all my documents to them at a police station within seven days. This had nothing to do with claiming anything but, purely down to the fact I was involved in a road traffic collision. Did the police not ask you to do something similar?

If they didn't you may be one lucky S.O.B. and have gotten away with it. If so, I'd suggest you keep a low profile and say nothing. Best not to disturb a hornets nest. Thumbs Up

Oh....and get your CBT re-done ASAP.

I wasn't asked by anyone to produce my CBT when I was taken out by a Clio last year.. it was valid though!

If you're that worried about it, get yourself a new CBT as soon as you can and if the insurers ask to see your certificate just send them your latest one and say you binned your out of date one?

Book in for your CBT sharpish. If challenged produce your new, valid cert and explain that you disposed of the previous cert as it was rendered obsolete by the new cert. Then pray that no one is having a slow enough day to investigate further.

Edit: yeah, what he said ∆∆∆∆∆

Great, thanks very much for the replies. I will get it sorted ASAP, was planning on calling around tomorrow to see how fast I could get one. May have to take a taxi to the training centre though :p

The police didn't ask to see my CBT, I just showed them my provisional licence and they checked insurance etc. Guess I was lucky on that one then!

As above get a new cbt asap, as far as im aware there is no digital copy of your cbt so as long as you have a valid cert your bases are covered.

Take this as a lesson and dont be a silly boy next time Wink

As above - I'd be fairly hopeful they wouldn't ask.

Someone I used to know had an 'interesting' situation - a car pulled out in front of him and he flipped the bike (with pillion), but didn't actually hit the car.
He wasn't insured, nor did he have a licence*, but was able to claim from the MIB as it wasn't "his fault". Got a bit lost in how that worked.
He did die eventually and was very likely related to the injuries - not helped by not being particularly healthy in the first place.

He didn't get prosecuted for anything.

*Ammusingly he'd been stopped by the police a few times before, but was just searched for drugs and let on his way.

Thanks guys, yeah I will use this as a lesson to keep on top of these things a bit better. I'll eat the old certificate when it turns up lol

Claiming without insurance, didn't think you could do that lol. Makes my problem seem a bit better!

Being of a age that did not have this CBT lark....

I take it that they have a taken or expiry date on them?

If so then its going to be pretty clear that the new cert was issued AFTER the accident......

Better ask the tester nicely if they can back date the cert to cover the missing days.. Karma

Having no CBT certificate makes no difference to you making a claim against the person who caused the crash and has no bearing.

It is no different to making a claim if you had no licence or you were a pedestrian, your claim is against the third party.

Yours is a common problem (no CBT that is) so do not worry about it. Get your solicitor (or claims management firm if you go down that route) to get the letter of claim sent asap as the clock regarding statute of limitation is nw running.

It just means that his CBT could have run out after the accident and he got it renewed.
CBT's are valid for 2 years.

No it won't, insurance companies can't revoke 3rd party cover.

Additionally, he is a 3rd party claiming from somebody else who has admitted liability, chances are it won't even be considered.

once you have your new CBT, book your tests!
£15.50 for the Mod 1
£75 for the Mod 2
even if you only do the A1 licence that in effect becomes a permanent CBT, and you can carry a passenger.
how much is a CBT now? £100?

Ah damn, yeah that is a shame that would have been perfect.

Yeah I put off doing the full licence after I moved. Wouldn't have this trouble if is just got it out of the way! The CBT is about 140ish I think.

I went with a claims management firm, they want to see my CBT to drop of a hire bike, so I was just planning to show them the new one once I've got it. Soonest CBT I can get booked is Sunday. Not much round this way.

I could and then my boss would sack me and my instructor career would be very short lived. Laughing

I once knew someone that was in an accident whilst not having a CBT. Bloke admitted liability and my mate got a producer. When going to hand producer in, said he lost his CBT and counter part in a house move and the woman on the desk just told him to hand it in when he got it back in the post.

No more was said about it and the rest of the claim went without too much of a hitch.

Lucky escape.
