My understanding is that you have to show a red reflector to the rear, and other than that, you can reflect any colour of light in any direction that you fancy. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Not illegal - but will get filthy 24/7 and need wiping to keep it reflective and white, more hassle than its worth i'd say
Just wear a hi-viz if youre concerned about visibility - seen at all angles and a higher height when wheels hidden by vehicles often might not be. |

Have a look at The Road Vehicles Lighting and Goods Vehicles (Plating and Testing) (Amendment) Regulations 2009 and post your thoughts...
As there is this EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM TO THE ROAD VEHICLES LIGHTING AND GOODS VEHICLE (PLATING AND TESTING) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS 2009 pdf file. | Memo pdf wrote: | ... Purpose of these instruments
2.1 To permit the use of distinctive retro-reflective markings (the battenburg pattern) on vehicles used for police, fire and rescue, ambulance, Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) or traffic officer purposes, ... |
Must admit I didn't have chance to untangle it.
I think they try and get retro-reflective as showing as a blue light and the old "you can't display a blue light" rule. Where in fact you can, just not a flashing blue light. A static reflecting blue isn't flashing though, is it.
Although not found where retro-reflective battenburg specifically stated for police use. However, could always get under impersonating police. So if your battenburg wasn't retro reflective would it make a difference? I think so.
after all that I think it comes under displaying only red to the rear, amber to the side and anything to the front. Emergency vehicles are exempt so can display blue to rear/side as well. I believe exemption under Section 44 of RTA 1988. So it looks like you can retro-reflect battenburg all you like to the front.

On a cursory read, the prohibition is on showing a red light to the front, or any light except red to the rear.
So don't have your battenburg on the arse end, or make sure it's non-reflective there.
However, the answer to the original question is this:
| wrote: | (1) No vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which is capable of showing a red light to the front, except– [or] (2) any light to the rear, other than a red light, except–
[...]
(q) reflected light of any colour from retro reflective material or a retro reflector designed primarily to reflect light to one or both sides of the vehicle and attached to or incorporated in any wheel or tyre of –
(ii) a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination; |
