No you haven't.

You just have to be able to touch the footrests. No lower limit.

(Assuming "here" is the UK)

I don't want to bother you, but according to law no. 361/2000, § 7 (1), e: pillion rider must be at least 12 years of age. So if you ever travel here, have you pillion 12+ or lying about his/her age. Police shall not examine age of minors under 15. That's the time when one get his/her ID so there's no point in lying about age since that moment anyway. Smile

he looked like it wasn't his first time on a bike and it did look almost safe. but man, if something came out of no where he'd probably not have a quick reaction time, and with no gear on... ouchy.

It's not like he was letting the kid filter through Picadilly!
Six Years Old?
That's how young they start'em in Cadet Trials and Small-Wheel Moto-Cross; Solo, on thier own bike; over big bumps and stuff.

I have to agree with this, its a perfectly straight road, and the dad is ready to take control incase anything happens or another car appears.

Yes its not the safest thing in the world, but come on, a lot of people on their high horses are commenting on this vid on youtube.

EDIT: Its more bad parenting having the kid on the bike with no gear, likewise the rider having next to no gear also it seems.

He's probably safer there than on the pillion (if it has one) - unless strapped on with bungees!
It looks like the bike has a sort of cruise control so he wasn't holding the throttle - or doing anything much since it would just carry on in a straight line without considerable input from the bars.

I marshalled (waved a safety flag) at a motorcross event once and some of the kids were amazing. There'd be a huge variation in kids that froze up and stalled at the top of the big-drop off where I was, and others who would fly over the edge with the throttle pinned. Most of the kids on their small bikes where getting round the track quicker than lots of the adults there who only rode mx casually.

Looks like great fun although I would have most likely kept my hands a bit closer to the bars! I guess the kid already has experience on a mini moto or something smaller.

To be honest, motorcycles weigh so much and are stable enough at those speeds that letting the kid hold the bars probably has about as much effect as just letting the bike run with nobody holding them at all.

Personally, I'd probably get a jacket and a full face lid on the kid before doing that, but there's nothing inherently dangerous about that particular manoeuvre. When I was a kid my dad let me do something similar with his mk1 Cavalier estate on the motorway at 4 in the morning.

Just out of my curiosity, where would you get a lid that'd fit? If the helmet does not fit properly, then it does not work. Thumbs Up

Kids heads don't grow as much as thier bodies; why cartoon 'babies' always have disproportionately big heads.
From about eight or nine years old, thier heads are likely to be 90% the size they will be as an adult, small or extra small adult helmets are often in about the right size range.
However, there are plenty of 'youth' helmets available for off-road competition, such as School-Boy Scrambling or Youth Trials or even Junior Go-Karting.

BUT, personally, I wouldn't stick my kid in a full-face. Simple reason is its heavier.

Was a bit of a ho-ha about it a few years ago, I believe in BMX cycle-racing, parents sticking full-face School-Boy-Scrambling hats on thier kids, and the children suffering serious kneck injuries. Studies resulted in lightweight thin-skin, full-face BMX helmets, which were a lot lighter than hard-shell MX hats.

In a pre-adolescent child, the disproportionately large head is a heavy load on an under developed neck. They also still have reletively soft skulls, the bone plates not fully fused together; so they are actually less likely to sustain a head trauma than an adult; BUT they ARE more likely to suffer a kneck injury, and more weight you stick on thier head, more likely that is.

Natural 'balance' of pre-adolescent child is also different to an adult, and they are 'evolved' to fall on thier bum, not thier face.

So again, balancing risks, I'm far more comfy sticking my kids in my lightweight open face (conveniently size 'small') than in the full-faces.

I'd preffer to stick them in a soft-shell BMX helmet, thats lighter still; but none are approved for road use on a motorcycle, unfortunately.... so I'll just have to rely on trying my damnedest not to fall off!

What the heck; least I'm not perching them five foot in the air on top of a ton of Tesco's finest burger meat; and cheering them on over the jumps, whilst sipping my sloe gin from the tail-gate of the Range Rover, old boy!
