It kinda depends on which "guide" you decide to follow...the official Honda book says to keep it 5000rpm for the first 500 miles...I have managed to get it to about 46mph by following this guide...

...however, having spoke to a few bikers and mechanics and reading some articles, I am a little less concerned about the rpm now...just make sure that you don't rev it too hard and labour the engine at any time, but try to take each gear through the revs...

...just my thoughts...

im not a big fan of changing gears at low speeds. would it work well if i put the bike stright into sixth gear and ride it in six until the running in period is over?

Uh, apparently not...you need to change up and down through the gears and through the revs...riding around an A-road or motorway for hours and clocking up the miles in top will do your engine more harm than good...apparently...

Course, it all depends on how much you value the engine and how long your gonna keep the bike for.
If you dont bother running it in then you can get another 10%bhp(apparently) but at the shortening of engine life.
Your choice.
