Title is misleading. The problem isn't unreported crimes, it's crimes that are reported but not recorded by Plodforce.

Examples from here would be having your foot run over by a car, or your motorcycle stolen by a supermarket, both of which were dismissed as "civil matters" by Dibble.

Chief Constable Jeff Farrar, Acpo [Plc's] national police lead for crime statistics wrote:
it's important to recognise that in many of the cases identified by HMIC as failing to comply with the Home Office counting rules there's clear evidence that the public have still received an appropriate and responsive service.

= a Plastic Plod sent round 3 weeks later with a customer satisfaction survey.

It's just a game to the shiny backside ranks. Sad

A few incidents I reported were recorded as "suspicious circumstances - no crime" (so 3 guys trying to rip my bike away from my back wall at 3am is just something to be suspicious about...).

I (and some neighbours) had a lot of problems with the police not being interested, complained, took it further, went to MP etc etc. Basically the police wouldn't have it. The chief constable gave my MP a false account of what had happened, and even politely tried to tell me that my car being nicked couldn't have affected me as (according to him, and him alone) it wasn't my car...

Never actually got anywhere. In the end, everyone was telling me I should move (police, MP, council, etc), which tells me they think I'm the problem as I'm willing to speak up.

Did you take it to their Professional Standards, and then to the IPCC?

MPs have essentially sod all say, especially now that Police and Crime Commissioners have been slotted in to act as another pointless buffer.

Unreported crimes is a different problem that is a result of crimes not being recorded or investigated properly or dealt with appropriately by the court system.

I suspect it's all to do with police targets, they need to meet whatever targets they've got so it's not worth them spending their time on stuff that isn't going to help them meet their targets. (sauce? none)

Went through all sorts of "due process" (including the IPCC), made sod all difference. The crime commissioner didn't even bother to reply or get in touch (which didn't surprise me), and professional standards suggested I keep writing to the same people over and over (they couldn't advise me of another quango to go to, as I've been through em all).

Seems it's pretty common in some places, so the press weren't interested either (that did surprise me a bit).

I found there were lots of rants against my local force for various reasons, but none of them ever got dealt with.

I was talking to a South Yorkshire cop recently and he told me that they are all under immense pressure to 'not record' certain types of crimes.
I can't remember a lot of the details but I do recall him telling me that the previous day he had been bollocked for arresting some scrote for robbery/attempted robbery.

This is exactly the same in the NHS at the moment in many areas - all the budget cuts that magically occur and are made out to be 'savings' are actually just massaging and ignoring the reality of the situation.

Problems that result from budget cuts are crossed off as being 'unavoidable/accidents' by management when its quite apparent there could of been more done in many cases to prevent the outcome if there had been appropriate funding for various areas.

Expect it will only get worse running upto the election Rolling Eyes.
