Finally got my camera back, a bit potatoey quality but hopefully you can hear the chatter.
https://s933.photobucket.com/user/robiddon/media/P1050036_zpsaa8ec2ea.mp4.html
You can hear the hesitation in the throttle, will take carbs out this weekend for an inspection and clear out. Its been to a garage for oil and plugs, which cured the hesitation for a few days, then it seems to be doing it again.
The garage reckoned there may be cylinder damage, suggested getting an entire new engine, rather than splitting it and repairing the damaged bits. Seems a tad excessive to me? maybe not?

You're worrying too much.
Mine has always hesitated to rev in neutral when cold it is perfectly normal. Changing the air filter will improve this though when was it last changed?
Also unless you know what you're doing which I am guessing you don't seeing as you said it went to a garage for oil and plugs I would leave it for someone who knows what they are doing.
One last thing find a different mechanic or better still buy the Haynes. |

Thanks for the advice. It's actually hesitant after its warmed up properly. The vid was after work and engine was up to temperature. Get a bit of smoke from the exhaust as well, will check the filter ____________________ Up the bum no babies. |

It does sounds clattery.
First odd, don't pull the carbs. You took it to a garage for oil and plugs, you don't have the knowledge to mess about with carbs. If it runs, they're probably ok. Petrol keeps them clean. The only possible area to look at would be the mixture screws. You may be able to remove, clean, and reset the screws without removing the carbs from the bike. If you take them off the bike, you run a good change to cocking up the installation and having a massive air leak.
Do these bikes run a proper oil filter, or do they have the nasty Honda trick of some kind of strainer and/or centrifugal filter? If they have a strainer or centrifuge, are they clean? Proper oil filters have a bypass valve so oil still gets to the engine if the filter is clogged. Strainers do not, centrifuges probably don't. If it's clogged, your engine dies fast.
Are you in London or down on the south coast? Your profile is confusing, someone local may have a look and listen. |

Yeah sorry, I recently moved to London from Bournemouth.
Garage was adamant that the misfire as caused by the wrong plug type and said iridium plugs are a big nono in Varas and reckoned that's whats shagged mine, talking to Paddy on ere he reckoned otherwise...
Will check oil filter on weekend. Got a carb balance it coming next week so can adjust them properly. I've adjusted the idle screw and it runs idles fine after its warmed up.
Will the carbs be that difficult/complicated to remove? its quite well illustrated in the manual.
I'm only intending to keep it for a month or so for mod 2 practise before moving it on, didn't pay much for it so its not the end of the world if it's a complete goner.
Would like to add; Although I know very little on carbed engines, i'm not scared of a spanner and have a mate with a garage to do work in. I took it to a local bike garage as at the time I was doing 12-14 hour days at work including weekends at the time, but that's changed now ____________________ Up the bum no babies.

So had a fun day yesterday at a mate's garage having a tinker with the bike. Got as far as takin the fuel tank off, rigging up the carb balance gauges as best as possible and having a fiddle with the balance. A bit of emulsified water in the airbox, and bits of blue tissue paper stuck all over the filter... ? - which was in pretty poor condition anyways, so ordered a new on've them.
Cleaned all the jizz out of there and ran som water through the old air filter. The tissue paper was a bit odd, why would anyone do that?
Took Robby's advice and didn't go too much further with dismantling carbs as i'd rather have a slightly naff running bike, than a pile of confusing bits on the floor. Stuck some seafoam into a tank and topped up with super unleaded, went for a blast up and down a duel carriageway late last night and bike seems to pick up a bit better but the hesitation's still there.
Not going to do anything else with the bike now aside from maybe fitting a 12v power cable for sat nav and stick fuel in it. Mod 2 beckons ____________________ Up the bum no babies. |
