Check T&C's; aparently there is an iundustry set guide-line on 'reasonable' admin fees in this circumstance; I think you get back a 'pro-rata' proportion of the premium for unused 'months', so 11/12ths, less set-up admin; usually around £30 or so.
BUT, if you buy on credit plan? Gawd alone knows! You probably wont be liable for a years interest if you cancel in cooling, but probably still get hit for pretty hefty admin charge.
I know that my insurance probably isn't worth cancelling ever! Due to the admin fees and cancellation charges etc!
It's probably not worth the hassle of even exploring. Personally, I can hire a trailer for £40 a day, and I have a hitch on back of the car.... and that's if I cant call in a favour from a mate with a van, or get a borrow.
It's certainly not worth the risk of riding without insurance; never really has been, and now? With plod 'wired' to their in-car-computer, and convinced of its infallibility? Nah! Van or Trailer. fuck, if push came to shove, even a bludy wheel-barrow! Its only an hours walk or so.... Poor IP had to push his VT almost that far up the M42 a week or so back! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Bullshit of Teflonian proportions.
It entirely depends on the certificate of insurance (and the policy).
I've read both of mine very carefully, and would cheerfully ride (with the owner's permission) a roadworthy bike that's isn't covered by a policy of insurance or showing on the MID. Come at me, Dibble.
If you think this isn't the case in England (where OP is), then you need to take it up with the Court of Appeals, because their ruling on it is as plain as a pikestaff. The certificate means what the certificate says, regardless of any jive from Dibble, or even the insurer's phone monkeys. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

If you think this isn't the case in England (where OP is), then you need to take it up with the Court of Appeals, because as their ruling on it is crystal clear. The certificate means what the certificate says, regardless of any jive from Dibble, or even the insurer's phone monkeys. |
Sorry to contradict, but | Skudd wrote: | The bike needs to be insured, then your friend can ride it. An insured person can no longer ride an uninsured bike. | is correct.
To be able to ride/drive a vehicle on your policy under the Ride/Drive other vehicles caveat, the vehicle must be insured in its own right to start with.
Otherwise what is to stop you buying a 50cc ped, insuring it for £50 to get the other bike entitlement, then buying yourself a Busa or Gixer and riding it for the year on your cut price policy.
These days, the only time your vehicle can be uninsured is when it is officially SORN'd, at all other times it must have a valid policy in its own right.
As for the original question, Nope, don't do it, the weekend is supposed to be nice, get a back pack full of water and snacks, make a day of it and push it home

Roger is 100% spot on there, but, it seems that many insurers are now cottoning on to this fact, and specifically stating that there must be an insurance policy in force on the vehicle being driven, so be very careful
read your insurance certificate carefully. i know that both my car and motorbike policy don't require there to be a current policy in force on the vehicle i am driving/riding, and I confirmed that with the call centre monkeys. that said, if you then park it up somewhere, you are no longer driving/riding, and it could be argued that no insurance is in place........ what a mess ____________________ Past - 1988 honda revere 600, 1996 kawasaki gpz500s, 1999 Yamaha R6

no, it's not. see the court ruling that roger posted, and my two insurance policies. i promise you that i have looked in to this very carefully for various reasons i wont bother going into.....

depends on your certificate of insurance, and the exact wording.

erm, the fact that your policy certainly states that it must not be owned by you (and in many cases, a member of your immediate family)

this is true, and the owner would technically be up for a continuous insurance fine, but that isn't the question here

Not worth it.
I insured a bike and cancelled within 14 days and got every penny back.
