Semi narrowed down my choices to 3 bikes. I know i will test ride them first but there is a gulf in price..

ER6. 2008-2011. £2.5-3k
XJ6. 2009-2010. £3-3.5k
Hornet. 2008-2010. £3.5-4.5k

What more do you get for your money on the hornet and xj, if anything? I do prefer the looks of the later hornet rather than the older and would prefer a newer bike. Ive only ridden the ER6 whoch is what i do my lessons on which is nice but be good to have something else.

I would possibly go a little bit older. Being a first bike it may not get the attention it would require + you are more likely to drop it/scuff it up a bit. I would then get rid of it after a year.

I would still get something fuel injected though. I quite liked the hornet I rode. I was bit of an animal with -1 on the front and +2 on the back. Seemed like a pretty fun bike.

I rode a much older xj6 and while it was a great bike, just felt boring. Feels like it was designed to get you from A to B with as little hassle as possible and that was it.

I would put a fazer on the list. Lots of spare parts available. Runs forever no matter how much you neglect it.

I'd go for an older Hornet, pre "gay shape."

What do you get, 600 sports engine crammed into a road based frame, people love their Hornets.

If anything, the correct comparison to your list would be a CBF600, el boggo standard 600 IL4.

I went for a thundercat for my first bike. They're as cheap as chips because of the silly name, all day comfortable, easy to handle if you keep it below 6k but feel like a proper sports bike if you wind them up.

I passed my test in May and did a track day at Cadwell in October, I couldn't stop grinning!

I also have an SV650 hack that's plenty of fun with decent tyres.

Worst case with both of them is you bin it (which lets face it the stats say is likely) then not much lost.

Doesn't the CBF600 just have the CBR600FW engine but uber detuned?

The hornet is thirsty and has a small tank, I remember ride outs when the Hornet owners were filling their tanks 4 times back in the good old days.

They aren't especially thirsty, the tank is just tiny. The CBF600 is much more economical, a tiny bit better built and much slower and boringer.

It's not wrong to like the new shape one, but apart from a longer tank range it's not a whole lot more capable. Evolution rather than revolution and the changes won't add up to much difference on your first big bike.

That's my understanding. The CB600F (Hornet) has a slightly detuned CBR600 engine, while the CBF600 has a much more detuned engine (or tuned for lower-rev torque).
