Had one wrist put back together after a ligament was snapped a few years ago. Lots of problems since (generally work or weather related), shooting pains (anywhere in my arm), tingles, cramps, sensations of pressure, clunky movement and occasional (and very brief) loss of strength and mobility.

A carpal tunnel support can help a lot, though they can make things worse if you're out in the cold (due to having a metal strip that will suck the heat out of your hand). In the cold, a standard support tube is better.

Resting the hand can help too, though that depends on what you do for work.

Best thing to do though is speak to your doc and start trying to find out what's wrong. You might need to push a bit if you know somethings wrong (GP referred me to consultant who kept turning me away saying my problems were all in my head, 18 months of pestering, an MRI scan, and keyhole to stick a camera in it later another consultant found the snapped ligament...)

If you're getting an RSI from work then both the cause and the effect needs to be dealt with.

If work related, what work?
Iirc the health and safety management should organise a review and risk assessment.

Fix it so it can't move, apply ice. That should help, helped me alot. Thumbs Up

By the way, don't leave the ice on the hand too long, you do not want any frostbites.

Yeah, I have noticed doctors seem to think pain's imaginary.

Because a lot of people just go to the GP for sympathy. The vast majority of people either need 10 minutes of someone (doctor) listening to their 'woe is me', or just need buy-at-the-supermarket painkillers. Only a small minority of people with pain need further investigation, and even most of those don't have anything particular wrong with them.

Unfortunately it sometimes means people with genuine problems feel like they're not believed by their doc or consultant.

The pain can be cramp in my hands, pain in the wrist, or quite often forearm. GP reckons it could be an RSI injury (amazing they're Rolling Eyes). Does anyone have anything similar, if so what (tendonitis etc.) and what helps?

well i had a bout of RSI or tendonitis as the doc called it
(repeated task causing the problem)

the warning sign of the onset, was it felt like a really tight elastic band was wrapped around my wrist.

at first i simply rubbed at the arm to get the flow going again,
but that failed to relieve the problem and eventually i sought medical help.

a course of meds helped but it was the wrist support that really saved the day.

at work i simply moderated what i did, the pain lasted for a good while so it was on for a week at least, but riding the bike was difficult.

I used the metal plate type wrist support at first, but now when i feel the early first signs, a simple wrap around reliefs the pain and a few days later i'm all good.

I know, but they also miss stuff, my dads nearly been killed twice by them in recent years.

Firstly he went being unable to urinate, was told it was a kidney infection, mentioned the problem when his partner was in hospital for something. They said it didn't sound like an infection, removed a dangerous amount of urine from his bladder, and diagnosed a problem with his prostate.

Different GP, went with symptoms of angina. Later on went in for a a hernia op, had trouble coming round, turns out he had clogged arteries and needed a double triple (so 6) bypass.

tl;dr I don't trust them

at all

Wow thats pretty bad stuff, anything more than a quadruple cabbage (CABG) is very rare. So rare it would be unlikely to get picked up except by a cardiologist or cardiothoracic surgeon.

Trouble is there are so many potential problems, even specialists struggle to get the right diagnosis first time round. And they specialise in just one very specific area of the body. GPs have to deal with the whole body (and mind) and so the very nature of general practice is to become a jack of all trades, and as a result, a master of none.

That is just the way it is, and it's the same in pretty much every country. The only real alternative is to go to the GP specifically just for a referral to go straight to a private specialist... which they'll do... but demands like that require you to spend your own money (or insurance) not NHS money.

I work at a keyboard all day and a couple of years ago was getting the same symptoms (shooting pains in wrist and back of hand, and in forearm). I got one of those ergonomic mice, the vertical ones, and made sure I had proper keyboard wrist rest. My problem went away and did not return.

I get similar from riding motorbikes enthusiastically unfortunately (particularly dirt bikes at speed off road) and using some tools, especially screw drivers putting bigger screws into wood.

If I don't do things like the above, I don't get the pain.

I've tried various things.

I got a support like the second one pictured above. Just putting it on firmly actually made me feel similar pain, despite not being in pain before putting it on!

I still haven't worked out exactly what it is, but reckon Carpel Tunnel is the most likely.

Must remember to do have movements that the internet said may help.

That could be arm pump.

In simple terms - the muscle is in a casing that doesn't stretch... but when the muscles are constantly used over and over they swell... non-stretchy casing literally crushes the muscle.

It is particularly common with off road biking due to the bumps etc and the exertion going through arms whilst the wrists are pinning the throttle and grabbing the clutch, force going through the arm and wrist at odd (unnatural) angles etc.
