It's got my vote for project of the year 2014! Thumbs Up

Do you reckon with that frame and suspension, it will eclipse the TZR pit bike you had for it's level of awesomeness?

Oh and the MX125 pipe will look a million times better than the AF1 pipe too! Don't junk the old pipe though in case you ever start a 125cc road bike project!

Cheers!

With the TZR, I was young when I built it. Fairly un-skilled compared to now, and the bike never ran quite right because of that.
I cut corners on things like an inlet manifold, and nut/bolting everything, rather than welding.

After I broke the TZR for parts, I used to talk about building another 2/ pitty, but the grueling work I put into the TZR always put me off.

I'm so glad the Rotax 123 cropped up on ebay so cheap though, because it's been a really smooth project this time. Having the MIG welder and a far better tool kit, has made it so much easier to do.

Handling wise, I can not say yet, as it really is a Frankenstein build. The frame was meant to have longer forks and swing arm, along with 17" wheels.

The TZR build, was all on a modified KLX110 (Pit bike) Chassis, with Pit bike swing arm, KTM65 forks, and 12" pit bike wheels.

The Rotax build is on the Malaguti frame, with the KLX110 pitty subframe fitted to it.
Pit bike forks, GSXR600 yokes (Modified by Pete), a pit bike swing arm, And 13" Aprilia SR125 wheels. Laughing
Oh, and a Ducati rear shock!

I've bought a pack of spacers with an ID of 30mm, as the stem bolt is too long for the frame.
I can swap the spacers to the bottom, or top of the stem bolt (On the outside of the bearings), to move the frame, up and down, between the yokes. This will really help out with the set up of the frame, as there isnt much movement with the fork legs in the yokes, they're already right at the top and the front end could do with coming up a bit.

At the moment, with no headstock spacers fitted, the frame is obvs sitting on the bottom yoke, I've got about 15mm of gap to play with, so can stick all the spacers underneath to start with, and see how it sits.

Rear shock is adjustable massively too! And there are multiple top mount holes, I can move the angle of the shock too.
And if that is not enough, the bottom mount actually unbolts from the swing arm, so I can spacer that out too!

My main concern is the wheels.
They are insanely wide! 3.5j front and rear.
The tried and tested widths on a pit bike, are 2.5j rear, and 2.15j front.
That said, there has never been a pit bike I know of, on 13" wheels.

Need to decide on some tyres, I'm warming towards the Michelins as they are dual compound.

Time will tell I guess, it'll no be finished fully for a long long time. Things will need to be changed and tweaked along the way.

+1.

Its not the segmented expansion I was hoping for, but it still looks just fine so you can have some more Karma as promised.

She's really coming together nicely, good effort OP Thumbs Up .

The wheels are a pair of front wheels, from an Aprilia SR125 (Scooter) with a billet sprocket holder welded to the rear.

Exhaust is great, fits really well, segmented one would have been nice, but the extra £££ made it hard to justify.

Sorry to off topic, but a don't rate a segmented 50cones all welded together pipe any more than a very good pressed steel sections pipe like the MX125 has. That pipe is so smoothly shaped and I bet it works very well!

I'm sure it could be powdercoated, ceramic coated or plated if you wanted more bling,

The guy I bought it from said it's been de-restricted, and ran very nicely on his bike. So hopefully it'll be alright.

Had a poke around with the bike today. Fitted some stem bolt spacers to the bottom of the stem, under the lower bearing, so it's brought the front end up just over 1/4".
Also packed the axles out properly, so the wheels are central etc. Just need to get the washer packs converted into ally wheel spacers now. Smile

Next thing for the list is going to be some tyres, and to fit a front brake up.
After that, electrics, and hopefully it'll run.

Had the MIG out today, got a little bit done to the bike as I am sick of it sat in the garage doing nothing.

Made up a link pipe to fit the end can, and also made a calculated dent in the spanny to clear the oil pump cover. Assuming a 122 Rotax engine either has a different oil pump cover, or a different manifold for the exhaust. Either that, or the spanny just sits FUCKING close on the MX125.

Picked up a block of ally round bar today. Got a 240mm front disc coming for it and going to get my Grandad to turn an adapter plate to run a 5 bolt disc on the 3 bolt wheel. Will stop on a 6pence with the KTM Brembo caliper and NC29 master cylinder. Smile

I've had it quite a while Paddy. I'm not great with it, but I just grind all my welds back with a flappy disc to make it look neat.
As long as there is a decent Heat-affected-area then it'll be a strong enough weld. (I hope!) Laughing

Today I got a bit more done. Stripped engine back out of frame, welded up all the mounts I need etc.
While messing around with the swing arm and pivot bolt, I noticed that the chain is going to be running a little closer than I'd like to the frame. So I opened up the frame rails by about 10mm using a length of threaded bar and 2 nuts. Then welded in a brace to hold it.
Added bonus is I can now weld 2 lugs to said brace, and it'll be a 3rd engine mount for the lower engine mounting point.

Bargain of the year. Just won these for £5 Razz

Proper Aprilia RX125 rads, so perfect for the Rotax engine, and perfect for my bike as it's of an MX / Supermoto style. They will fit nicely behind the tank shrouds I hope.

Set of plastics arrived today, so fitted up the remaining 3 graphics, and fitted them up to the bike.
Also bought a proper axle for the rear wheel, and a high tensile spindle for the swing arm, all fitted and spaced up nicely. PLENTY of sprocket/chain clearance now too. Smile

Slight issue / school boy error. While fitting up the exhaust, I didn't have the shock fitted. Res fouls stinger pipe. DOH! Rolling Eyes

Rather than sacrifice my Ducatti shock for some Chinese piece of crap, I think I will just start again with the exhaust end can/stinger to make it fit around the shock.

Tomorrow I will mostly be welding the frame some more, removing any more bits that are not needed, and just double-double checking everything before it goes off for powder coating.

Rads have arrived. They look awesome. Going to fit them up tomorrow with some weld on brackets. And once they're done, I do think it's time to get the frame and wheels powder coated. Razz
