Can't make any real suggestions myself as I'm still looking for some decent places too, with being new to the area.
But, I just wanted to ask, what's the deal/attraction with Southport? I've ridden over there a fair few times since moving back to the UK and I just don't get it. It seems that a load of blokes just park up at the carousel and eat a bag of not so nice chips.
I've been to rivi and snake pass a couple of times, which are at least quite nice areas.
Am I missing something? ____________________ There ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk.

Get out a map, and look at some roads you haven't used before. Take it from there. Turn down any interesting looking side roads you come across, see where they go. Sometimes, the best rides happen this way. (Sometimes the worst ones too, but that's the adventure ).
Destinations are about what interests you. So what interests you? Sometimes I'll plan in cafes that I know about, sometimes I just look for something as I go (MaccyD's as an absolute last resort! )
As stinkwheel has recently pointed out to me, and I found out for myself recently, Yorkshire Dales are better for roads, Lake District for scenery or something slower and a little more challenging - can be very jammed at this time of year though. |

If you like slow stuff, carnforth north round the coast to milnethorpe was quite enjoyable for me, although I was on a 125.
Faster stuff would be from carnforth to devils bridge (that's quite a nice road), or head pretty much straight north from Bolton. The big hilly bit above the a65 is hawks.... Very well regarded, although I've still to get up there
I was up the lakes today, and spent most of my time doing 20, but I was in Ambleside / consiston, so it wasn't a massive surprise.
A6 (?) from the Penrith m6 roundabout to Kendal is quite nice as well.
