I'm looking ahead to find some gear to wear for my winter commuting. Must be:

Warm
Fully waterproof - as in no wet crotch if I get caught in a downpour and no rain creeping up the sleeves.
Suitable for daily use right through winter - over clothing
Have waterproof pockets for wallet/phone etc
Not look too out of place on my Bandit

Does such a thing exist to fill all the above criteria? Basically I want to be comfortable on my bike this winter whatever the conditions.

Probably not what you're looking for if you want the gear itself to be waterproof - but one of these over any normal gear has done me perfectly the last few years, never let a drop in. The neck acts as a good wind-block as well as keeping the water out.

Added benefit in winter is it keeps the heat in quite nicely too - although its not very comfortable for wearing during summer showers as you end up sweating buckets.

If you really mean that, then I would recommend the Tucano Gaucho invalid blankets.

Gore-tex, and plenty of it.

I use a Bering jacket that's bonded Gore-Tex on the outside (not a liner - so the water runs straight off and doesn't soak into the outer layer) and Bering g-t lined trousers (bonded were too expensive!). Add the cheapest A* g-t boots and gloves and the only way I get wet is if it gets down my neck - I use a buff and neck tube to help seal that; I'll be looking harder at that area for the next jacket...

As far as waterproofing OVER your gear, I've had excellent results from my navy surplus waterproof jacket.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRITISH-GOVERNEMENT-SURPLUS-ROYAL-NAVY-WET-WEATHER-GORETEX-JACKET-LINER-NEW-/390408551226?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&var=660066376803&hash=item5ae629bb3a

They're made from goretex, which is highly waterproof.

For example -

Remember those rainstorms we had over christmas? I rode to work in that, every day 37 miles each way, mainly motorway. I wore that jacket through all that weather.

It didn't leak once Very Happy

For the price, you can't really go wrong.

Thumbs Up

Hadn't thought of that - up to about £200 I guess.

I don't want something to wear over gear, I want gear to wear over clothing.

For your requirements, IMO, you'll either be buying second hand good stuff (bonded goretex, like pro-shell, as mentioned earlier - I have this as a textile suit and it works), or replacing cheaper stuff repeatedly.

Is it 200 this year, or 200 every year? I got my goretex pro-shell suit for about 500 total - 150 for a discontinued line jacket, 350 for pants on discount. Look for Rukka Armas, Held Quattrotempi etc. pro-shell stuff, especially on German sites like louis.de, fc-moto.de, motoin.de etc. It may take a while before you can find the good stuff, but if you're not of average size and shape, your chances may improve.

can't say ive ever owned a pair of trousers that never leaked in the crutch in sustained heavy rain,
most jackets are ok do do the job,
only thing that ever kept my lower half dry were a set of gortex over trousers that i got from an army surplus store,

can you wear jeans for your job?? or are you a suit?
kevlar jeans for every day use then goretex over trousers in your topbox/under the seat for if it rains,
that would be my call,

infact thats what i do, but i wear canvas trousers as a do every thing bottom half, they have a waterproof coating for light rain

Does Rukka gear justify the price tag? I could conceivably pay £1000 for gear if it was going to keep me warm and dry throughout the winter nights.

However, I'd be tempted to stick an all in one rain suit over my textiles and save myself £950.

i have some rev'it gear which is excellent,
the thing is, while its waterproof and keeps you dry, the shell of the jacket isnt actually waterproof, its the goretex liner that is,
as a result the 2 pockets that you use the most fill up with water,
and the 2 never used chest pockets are the waterproof ones,
luckily my phone is waterproof, or i would have had to replace it numerous times by now

I think you need to up your budget. If just jacket and trousers to about £500-£700, if you need boots and gloves add £200 to that.

If looked after the kit will likely last you 3-4 years but if you pay £200 you won't be guaranteed warm and dry for a year unless you are lucky with 2nd hand gear.

Carefully reading OP, theres no requirement for the outershell to be waterproof, therefore 99% of goretex or brand name copys will do the job. There are plenty on ebay - I got my current Dianese D-dry jacket for £34, I had one before that cost £200 Laughing Two pockets will get wet, but there are another two that dont.

I suspect you will be paying a lot of money for textiles that have the goretex on the outer layer, and this is perhaps why they make the cheaper ones as they do.

£200? I'd be looking at a rainsuit or a set of Regatta sailing waterproofs to go over my regular kit for that sort of budget. That way, you've got guaranteed waterproofing (and yes, the Regatta stuff is very good), and you can layer up underneath if you have to - being waterproof, they're also pretty convincingly windproof, hence my boil-in-the-bag based aversion to wearing them in anything other than properly crap weather.

cheap textile jacket & cheap waterproof overtrousers, i've been using this combo the last 3 years and remain nice and dry for commuting, though none of the occasions were more than 30 mins per go

For that budget I don't think you're going to be looking at decent kit, only over the top options - i.e. goretex coveralls, MAYBE a heated item or two.

If you're really strapped for cash consider starting with the surplus goretex waterproofs.

IXS seems to be the most popular among the riders at the moment, it was Hein Gericke gear but of course they are no more.

My winter gear...

I've just got this jacket and these trousers. With a shell jacket and overtrousers for real heavy rain you won't be getting wet through that or sweating too much either.

As well as the above I use Tucano furry muffs, Hein Gericke Goretex gloves when its warm, Thick Goretex Rukka Lobsters for when its cold and Goretex ECW (Extreme cold weather Norway issue) boots.

Just to make sure I stay warm I also have heated grips, a heated seat, heated jacket, trousers and insoles for when its really cold like -8 and below.

I'd listen to the grumpy old git above me over anyone else here. Laughing

But if you want my input (I'm sure you probably dont) then consider getting Triumph branded stuff. My trousers have held up pretty well, Jacket is a light/summer one so not so great in heavy downpours and ripped the forearm so that explains that.

https://www.triumphfactoryoutlet.com/

This website also sell's stuff cheap!
