So I checked my 1998 Honda Hornet's coolant today and it looks a bit like vommit. Mmmmmm......

Safe to say it needs changing.

I have some of this stuff lying around at home, (VW Coolant G12 Plus Plus)

https://c1552172.r72.cf0.rackcdn.com/55650_x800.jpg

Question is, will it be suitable? The Haynes manual says it must be a "Coolant suitable for Aluminum Engines" and I've read something before about a certain type of additive screwing things up so I thought I'd check.

Cheers, O

Should be fine. What's the specs?

I can't find that exact coolant on google, just another G12 plus plus one, which is fine for non-ferrous metals.

I can't find much on the specs, but I did discover this:

"G12 Plus is an antifreeze for passenger cars and trucks meeting the quality requirements of the automotive manufacturers especially suitable for alloy engines. It protects excellently against corrosion and cavitation, does not foam, prevents lime formation, and is neutral to different types of metals rubber parts and sealing materials which are used in the engine construction. It is produced under stringent quality controls and has proved excellent operating performance in daily use. G12 Plus free of nitrite amine and phosphate."

Trouble is I don't know which chemical compound it is that ruins the Hornets internals.

The reason I was not just buying some other stuff is I wanted to get it done tonight, this is good coolant IIRC and I already own it.

Cheers,

Should be fine. Aluminium is non-ferrous, and it's for non-ferrous metals. I also doubt it's pure aluminium, it's more likely to be an alloy, and your coolant is fine for that.

If you're worried just buy more. I'd probably just bung it in personally.

If it has to be done tonight and you're worried about it, just train out the vomit and fill with water until you can get some anti-freeze you're happy with. It's not cold enough to freeze pure water outside yet.

IIRC G12 was made because Euro manufacturers (mainly VAG) wanted a coolant with corrosion inhibitors that didn't contain phosphate. Apparently water in Europe has a much higher mineral content than the rest of the world and if you mix them with phosphate they create deposits that will block the system up.

Problem is G12 doesn't mix well with coolant that contains phosphate, so if you want to use it make sure you very thoroughly flush out the old coolant.
