As per the topic, if carbs gum up if you leave a bike standing for say 6 months (though I've left my carb CBR for 9 months before). Then what happens to fuel injectors?

In that FI doesn't have things like float bowls so there is less petrol standing in them, but petrol does go through them so there must be a tiny bit of petrol to go off in them right?

Injectors gum up. Fuel pumps gum up.

There is a thread on here with an SV650 that had been stood for years, pump was toast and he had to rebuild it.

Carbs have an air gap in the bowl and a breather to atmosphere. A fuel injection system is essentially sealed from air. That's not to say it doesn't happen just that it's much less prone to it.

And Nanny Brussels has been mandating stricter evaporation limits as well, because obviously that's a massive contributor to climate change and poor air quality...

Just as bad 1800W vacuum cleaners.

Injectors are often pressurised at pretty high pressure, so more likely to get blown out - but also more hassle to get sorted if there is issues.

Actually, Injector cleaning is quite cheap. £60-£100 for a full clean, flow and pattern test on an ASNU-type machine.

:err:, our definitions of cheap vary!
Sadly I can't consider half an hour of my time and maybe a soft bristle stolen from a washing up brush to be worth £60 to £100!

When I was having problems with R1 FI I think I found similar prices to the ones you quoted, so ended up getting a new bank of injectors for the lower end of that!

Interesting, I always assumed that injectors (I've always had carb'd machines) were non serviceable items.

Something goes wrong? you chuck and replace.

Nope, they can be cleaned, serviced - even modified. All they are essentially is a solenoid with a needle valve on the end.

I have a Merc that I converted to run on LPG, so the petrol injectors don't get used for months. On the odd occasion when I run out of gas and the system switches back to petrol, it runs as rough as old boots - but a shot of Redex and an 'Italian tune-up' soon fixes it.
