Posted: 15:04 - 26 Aug 2014 Post subject: So, my CG died. |
 |
|
My CG died a few weeks ago, it was a terrific puff of smoke after a 80 or so mile journey. I managed to get it running again, albeit by bump starting the bloody thing, and made it half the way home before the same happened again. When trying to bump it again, it was just a clicking of metal parts and no compression at all. With the expensive aid of a recovery firm I managed to get home.
It appears that the end of the spark plug has completely disappeared. There is a shed load of oil in the air filter, or there was, I cleaned it a bit. I took the valve cover off to see if there was anything visible, alas that too was covered in oil.
As far as I can tell, the bike will take far more skill and knowledge than I have to get it running again, unless it's a simple engine swap, which I am hesitant to do, once again lack of skill and such forth.
I need a bit of advice on how best to word what I say when trying to sell it as spares and repairs, and what price should I aim for. I think around the £250 mark is reasonable, the rest of the bike is in fairly decent nick, just recently had new tyres, still has MOT and tax until next April. Engines I can see are about £80-120 and for that price it'd be a stellar project for someone to get back on the road and use as a winter hack or all year commuter.
I now have a lovely Honda XR125L and have been enjoying the green lanes in and around Wiltshire.
Cheers fellas. |

Put a new engine in.
It's a very simple task that ought not to take more than an hour or two & will triple the value of the bike.
A CG with a blown up engine I'd not entertain the idea of paying more than £100 for ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Could be easier to fix than you think and you'll learn heaps trying to fix it Not worth a kick in the balls to sell it. |

Ack, not good news.
Yes, I really should change my BCF name
Well, I'm not too sure what to do, I don't particularly think I could get away with investing money to fix it to sell on given that I just bought another bike. I think selling it is my only real option, although I genuinely would love to learn about it by taking it apart and sticking a new lump in.
FYI it's the 2001 model, with the kick and electric start.
I think if I could get a cheap enough engine it may be do-able. Is it worth taking the engine out just to see how I get on, and perhaps selling it without the engine bolted in, but included in the sale, if I can't source a v. cheap replacement?
If it's worth more with the engine left in then I think I may as well leave it as it is, stick it on gumtree for £150 and see what happens, what do you guys think?
Thanks for the advice and such thus far, very helpful, albeit disheartening :p |

Yet again, thanks for the advice fellas. I think I'll list it with the reserve at what I'd really like to get, if it doesn't go, it doesn't go, and if it does I'll be chuffed.
I really would like to take it apart and repair it myself, but in reality my financial position doesn't allow me to do that, if I can get £150, then that helps a bunch, if I can get more, well, that's great!
If it doesn't go for the price I want, I'll look into taking it apart and such. My new bike has the same engine, so it'd be an extremely valuable learning experience.
Thanks a lot for the advice and the reality check in terms of it's value, as for your last post Rob, it'd be mint if I could recoup £400 out of it. |
