PostPosted: 19:02 - 28 Aug 2014    Post subject: 21stone and shortly about to take my DAS! Which bike please? Reply with quote

Hi all,

I have a small amount of experience riding from the lawless days way back when I lived in West London. I have ridden GPZ1100, an old Honda Revere, the classic Superdream and a Suzuki GSE550. I have my DAS on the 29th of Sept and I keep changing my mind trying to decide what bike to buy....

As the title explains... I'm heavy (weight training and a little to much food!) I have a £2000 budget, I would like a return of 40mpg or more. I don't want to feel like the bike is under powered. Occasional pillion and riding all year round rain or shine. Sold the car so full steam ahead. I've looked at the Yamaha YZF600r, Honda CBR600 2001, Honda VFR750/800 and of course the Suzuki GSF1200. I'm also interested in the Kawasaki ZZR1100. I would love to hear your thoughts...

My commute is 20 mile round trip.

Ta very much.

I'd say that a 1200cc bandit with some budget left aside for a new shock and a re-valve of the front forks would be a good start! It's a popular big naked bike that's also available with a half fairing and they are pretty cheap now if you can find a good one?

They are the most similar bike of your list to the GPZ1100 that you had before too.

Thanks stevo. I've read conflicting reports about the mpg. Have you owned one or know a mate who has. I'll be honest it's probably my first choice but concerned about the weekly expense on fuel.

seriously a bandit 1200 is a good suggestion big enough and docile enough for a older new rider with some common seance

Enjoy the MOT failure unless it's got a sidecar on...

Well I'm 20st and did passed my test last month. I bought a 1998 Triumph 900 Sprint. Its plenty quick enough, British, makes a great noise, and is practical too. Oh and it was very cheap! Getting almost exactly 40mpg as it happens. Smile

I did also consider a big Bandit, but they really are a heavy old beast.

Good luck with it whatever you get!

You could look at Sports Tourers - shouldn't feel underpowered, good for pillion work and some protection from the elements.

For about £1500 you could get a decent Triumph Sprint or even an ST1100 Pan European.

Pan is probably a bit much for a first bike and you may not even want that style of bike but give em a look.

I'm 23 stone (due to cake, not gym work) and until recently ran a CB500 twin. It wasnt the fastest thing in the world but pulled me along well enough for me to have fun on. I rode a 99 Fazer for my test which was comfortable enough and went well with me on it. 2003 CBR600 felt like a mini moto, 2007 GSXR 600 felt small too. My dads 2001 Bandit 12 felt nice, plenty of torque but felt a bit dated and old fashioned, very heavy. Another thing worth thinking about, if the weight limit is about 30 stone on a bike, you'll need to find a very small pillion to keep under it!

Steph knows where its at.

But no, ZX9R is probably an OK bike, without sounding harsh though, unsure if it has much tum tum room, my R1 wasn't exactly roomy and I'm an anorexic 13 stone in comparison Thumbs Up

Best of luck with whatever you try, assume you are thick skinned to have hung around for so long. Laughing

I sat on the bike yesterday. Loved it. Went back today and paid the deposit. I'll be riding it Monday. I felt no discomfort in the belly region Smile

Did you just sit on it? Or sit on it the correct way to ride it? Because it's not a bike you ride sat upright unless you like painful wrists.
