I was think about this yesterday.
The term "filtering" is massively inaccurate and realising this it has started to drive me insane when I see it used in the now incorrect context.
I assume the term filtering comes from a filter, and bikes passing through gaps in traffic like going through a filter.
But, that would mean the motorcycle is NOT filtering, but is being filtered. So when we go "filtering", we're actually being "filtered" by the traffic.
Now, I can't stop thinking about this constant misuse of the term.

I've seen various filtering videos from the UK and I still can not believe the mortality rates are that low. Well, yes the camera angle might made those videos look a bit more dangerous than they were but still, not safe stuff. When I filter, the traffic is standing and I slowly pass them around. The moment the traffic starts to move I stop and wait till the car ahead of me starts to move and then join the ''traffic stream''.
Once I tried to do the UK way, well I nearly had a brown code, bus started to move and made the gap so close I nearly scratched its side. So, I am cured now and I'm not gonna do that ever again. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Hence why the water comes out the end is "filtered water" (past tense). The same as when you finish filtering on a motorcycle you have "filtered" or more accurately "been filtered" or are now a "filtered motorcycle" |
Humans are rather self centric, especially when it comes to language. I am the one who filters the water... Without me nothing would happen - the filter would sit in the fridge* and the water in the tap.
Now, how does this relate to the motorcycle? Well... The cars are the filter, yet I still am the one who causes the filtering to happen.
Essentially, the human act of filtering is to push something small through a gap. The fact I may be on said small thing or simply pouring it is of no consequence.
That, and language is a tool, which dictionaries and grammar 'rules' document the usage of, rather than the other way round...

When a red traffic light is involved it becomes osmosis.
Bikes filter until they reach the front of the queue where they form a big blob of bikes, much like molecules migrating through a partially permeable membrane to an area with a higher concentration.
Dangerous balls-out hooningly fast filtering should be referred to as a ''trench run'' ala Star Wars. ____________________ Motorsapien Art |

Why do they call moving stair-cases that go down 'escalators', surely a down escalator ought be a "decentalator"?
De-Oderant.. surey should be called Re-Oderant.. I mean, it usually niffs as much as what was there to begin with!
And what about Rhubarb?
Which brings us to the coffee conundrum, which is already confuddled, 'cos you put 'coffee' in the machine, and get coffee out, but what you called coffee, when you put it 'in' is most certainly not the same 'coffee' as you take out to drink...
BUT.... if I stuck coffee in the percolator (Another conundrum perhaps) and added water... whilst waiting, you might ask "Is the coffee filtered yet"... to which I might reply "No its still filtering"..
Of course the coffee I put in the percolator isn't filtering, nor being filtered.. its just sat there, in the paper cone.. the water is filtering through the coffee, to come out... err coffee...
What do you put in a taster, speak NOW...too slow no its not toast its bread... comes out toast... well... in my kitchen often comes back out bread.. so I put it back in, and what then comes out is carbonised tiles... but fuck it.... I'll have cornflakes... back to the coffee?
Is it percolated, is it filtered? Is it Expresso, Americano, late, Cupachino, Mocca, Java, Brazilian Kenyan, fare trade or organic?
FUCK IT I'LL HAVE A CUP OF TEA!
So, I dont know... life is full of mysteries and conundrums; perhaps if you ask on the .Gov website under the freedom of information act, they'll give you a job to answer them and a grant to do the research.. in which case Fuck the tea, rounds on you.... mines a Pint... of Captain Morgan's & Coke... and yes you can probably write that off as research against expenses, so get in some dry roast peanuts too while your at the bar!
All this logs is making my strained... Oh No! Now there you go. We filter coffee, but strain tea.. perhaps we 'strain' through traffic? I've just got back from straining through traffic out of town, and am certainly now strained having done so, and been forced to think about whether or not it s the correct word for what I just did!
There you go, we ought to launch a campaign to get the work term 'straining' applied to the process of riding a motorcycle through dense slow moving city traffic, and a grant to award strained motorcyclists pints of Rum. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
