Saw two scrotes on a scooter literally stopping up next to bikes to check their 'nickability' on Thursday. I was watching from a 2nd storey window.

They parked up next to a couriers R6 but I think decided it was too shitty (sorry courier, it was).

These are the opportunist type who don't need to get the engine started as they will use the scooter to push your stolen bike along, especially if you've left your steering lock off making it super easy.

So please, steering locks on, disc locks on. Won't stop the van boys but will stop these 'yoofs' who are probably paid a couple of hundred to steal your pride and joy!

You're over estimating the strength of a steering lock.

Don't suppose you called the police or made a note of the registration of their ped? Not that the police can actually do anything about kids on a ped looking at bikes but if nothing else the ped details will be on their computer system and their crime statistics (or should that be reported active bike thieves or whatever their term would be for that).

Meh, if they want the bike then a steering lock isn't going to be much, if any, of a deterrent.

Just cos the ped kids left doesn't mean the bike isn't going to be stolen. If they're n00b bike thieves then they'd use their ped to push it along but if they've progressed past that level then they'll be scouting bikes out for someone else with a van to come and take later.

(I'm well aware that none of this will be news to Roger, it's more for the OP or anyone else who's not wise to what said scummy ped riding kids do.)

I'm not going to berate the op for trying, but to be fair there are probably half a dozen groups of kids on stolen scooters looking to steal a bike on any given evening. The heads up is futile, I'm willing to bet a pair of kids could have three or four bikes away in a night once they're in the swing of it.

I caught a pair of kids eyeing up my bike a year or three back, I very nearly learned the hard way that there isn't much you can do when dealing with feral youth's. I'll link the thread when I'm on a PC. To sum it up, we all know the police won't do shit anyway, and the kids generally have a big group waiting not too far away, so there isn't much we can do either.

Another Thumbs Down for steering locks. For all the good they do, yo may as well leave them off and prevent any possible further damage to your bike.

It was only down to having a disc lock on that saved my bike from getting nicked, which the local scrotes obviously only discovered after breaking my steering lock. Rolling Eyes

I had the same.

What really annoys me is the complete apathy by London police. They've given up to the point that bike thieves don't have to worry.

I was speaking with an individual from a major motorbike manufacturer and his comment that it is impossible to park a new, high-end sports bike in Central London without it being stolen. I'm paraphrasing but in London, one of my buying considerations is 'will it get nicked?'

When did the law become so absent?

Report to the police, best way in London is https://content.met.police.uk/Site/roadsafelondon

They will check the legality of the scooter, and most likely it will get a marker against it for the ANPR equipped vehicles to ping up.

I did leg it down the 2 flights of stairs to photograph them etc but they'd parped off by the time I go on the street.

I was just saying as it was so blatant in the middle of the day.
