wait before putting cover on?

Just got home through the wind and rain so the bike is both hot and wet.

I usually wait for the bike to cool before putting a cover on, should I avoid putting the cover on when it's wet?

The cover is an Oxford one, it claims to be breathable.

What's people's opinions?

As opposed to leaving it uncovered in the rain? Cover it up, should be fine, it's not cheese.

I had this dillema in my first year of riding. Then I used to leave my bandit in the rain for days on end as in typical British fashion it lasted for weeks at a time.
My new bike gets the cover as soon as I get in, its breathable and the bike is always dry in the morning. Although my Oxford rainex (is that the expensive one?) has started coming apart after a year of use. The glue is failing at the seems which blows chunks. I'm not sure if this is related to it been put on a cold wet bike.

I used one once upon a time, for around 2 weeks. The amount of surface rust that accumulated was unbelievable. Took it off, sprayed some GT-85 over the metal bits, no problems.

7 years later, 14 bikes and a few cans of GT-85, not one iota of rust. Left outside in all weathers.

Why can't you put your cover on the bike whilst its hot? Worst thing that will happen is that your seat will still be wet in the morning, which will definitely be the case if you leave the cover off

I put the cover on my bike hot a few times, and the wind blowing it against the downpipes and exhaust melted holes in it everywhere. Now I let the bike cool down before covering it.

My bike is a naked though so i'd imagine with a faired bike this would be less of an issue.

I just put the cover on every time I get off the bike when I know I will be leaving it unattended for extended hours.

Having said that it has sat in the rain for an hour or so unprotected so it could catch rain-herpes if I keep that up. I should invest in ACF-50 and stop telling myself "I'll get it next time". Ffs I was at Halfords today as well -.- maybe tomorrow on the commute to uni..

Depends how heat proof the cover is. I have an Oxford rainex and it's very heat proof. I can get in from two hour long rides and chuck the cover on straight away with no issues at all. Always dry the next day, no rust issues or condensation. Not sure how I feel about the cover being permanently off though, purely from a "prying eyes" point of view...

Covers for security, grubby cover instead of shiney bike, tied down and bungied on, few more seconds delay to get to the locks.

I did this with a Superduke a few years back...Placed the cover over the bike in the shed and went in for me tea...Came out next morning to find the back half of the cover melted to the exhausts...My boss weren't happy!

Depends on the bike: on my naked bike, I wait for it to cool, on my Pan I just put the cove on straight away. As for raining, I don't bother with the cover until it's dried out normally, unless I've reason to believe that that won't be happening soon (I look at the forecast).

if im really cold i put cover over both me and the bike and use engine as a heater before i go in, that way exhaust cools abit and i get warm quickly.

I haven't bothered if covers now in years, I would do if it was standing outside for a long time but not when the bike is being used.

Best thing to do is to remove anything on the bike that can rust.... replace with stainless or non-ferous part or give it a liberal coat of Hammerite. TBH, there's not that much that can rust on modern bikes, (tends to be cheapo fasteners more than anything else), and, as they're designed to be ridden in the wet, leaving the cover off won't do much harm.
Having said that, I don't like putting a cover on a wet bike so just wipe it down and get as much water off as poss with a micro-towel first.
