If you pay £200,00 to Tony Blair, he might be able to give an after dinner speech about the subject, he's the Middle East peace envoy you know.
George Bush: 'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."
"And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East'. And, by God, I'm gonna do it." |

Because of Taxes imposed by the Government. Yet they are quick to criticise the oil companies...
**EDIT**Apparently, it is currently 57p per litre tax, plus VAT. So around 80p per litre goes to the Government. |

Was surprised when travelling in Europe this summer that the UK fuel prices were one of the lowest. Italy was the most expensive of the places I visited. Although possibly made worse by the pound to euro exchange rate which is slightly better now I think. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

Working for an oil major it gets my back up when the government criticise the oil companies for the price of petrol.
Think about it - The oil company has to find the oil, get it out of the ground, transport it to the refinery, refine it, transport it to the distribution centre, distribute it to petrol stations and sell it.
Within that it has to make a profit as does all the parties along the chain.
Our lovely government come along and do nothing for about 3/4 of the total price going into their pocket, and they have the audacity to complain about the oil companies. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

Oil price goes up, petrol price goes up.
Tax goes up, petrol price goes up.
Oil price goes down, petrol price stays the same.
Oil price goes back up, petrol price goes up.
1p a litre tax saving, petrol goes down by 1p a litre
(which is completely unnoticeable because that would be a fuel economy difference of a fraction of an mpg, environmental aspects like air temperature and wind direction make a bigger difference.)
etc etc
Until the time nears for a General Election, and the politicians go vote fishing in a bid to stay in power by appearing to care about the publics interests, so they lay into the oil companies, and the price drops, very slightly.
Then the oil price goes up again, petrol price will go up.
Low and behold, a budget deficit... lets up the fuel duty.
and you get the idea.
I found a receipt in an old jacket for 79.9p/litre from when I was learning to drive. I can't even remember it being sub £1/litre ____________________ Current Bike: 1999 Honda CB600 FX Hornet

Gulf garage near me is 1.16p a litre at the moment. I found myself becoming all dewy eyed and grateful. Then I remembered I was still being ripped off, just ever so slightly less.
When I passed my test it was 0.75p a litre. |

I converted my Merc to LPG, and currently pay 51p to 55p per litre - but some service stations charge as much as 80p per litre!
Cost price is the same, Tax is the same, so the greedy bastards are the service stations. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

I heard UK petrol prices described as "The Rocket and the Feather"
When oil prices rise - petrol price shoots up like a rocket
When oil prices fall - petrol prices drop like a feather
Which I thought was quite apt.
I remember back when I was 16, I could completely fill my moped, buy a mars bar and still have change from a £5. Good times |
