Rather worryingly, the ads on my page are showing Happy Yule cards, so it would appear that the card-giving pressure is put upon pagan rituals as well ...

the evenings start to get lighter before the shortest day, the earth is in an elliptical orbit around the sun and as it reaches aphelion, furthest point of the sun and begins to turn back the gravitational pull accelerates the spinning of the earth slightly, so it pulls us round a wee bit faster making morning later
sort of thing
I got a B for GCSE in astronomy, get one of the bods with a degree in astro physics to explain it betterer

Keplar's First Two Laws
The fundamental Law (that's number 1)
states that each planet's path around the Sun
is not a circle, as was always thought,
but an ellipse. A loop of thread, kept taut
against two pins (the foci) , will produce
this pleasing curve, unless a pin comes loose.
One focus indicates the Sun's location.
Having defined the basic situation,
he tried to find how fast each planet went
at different point's along its path's extent
(by methods that were largely hit-and-miss).
The answer was Law 2, which goes like this:
