I have the unfortunate task of having to go to Israel to make some changes to a machine we sold to a customer there recently.

My boss has asked me if I am happy to travel and do it. I've not given an answer yet.

How risky is it though?

I will be going here:

Lol, it's only just next to Gaza. I'm no pro but whenever there's news of bombings the Israelis always shoot them down so you'll be fine. It's such an adventure, I've heard many people like to have 2 passports when they visit that region because just having a stamp can stop you gaining access to other countries for the future.

Will your employer get you another passport and give you some danger pay? :p

I was meant to be going before the end of January. I had no worries - you're more likely to die on your motorbike than a business trip to Israel.

Although the numbers are tricky to get a line on, somewhere between 6 and 87 civilians were killed on the Israeli side in 2014. Don't go to the other side though... ~1500 civvies killed.

If you do decide to go, make sure you obtain a copy of your employer's business insurance policy and ascertain very carefully whether any Employers' Liability cover for such a trip exists.

Not all EL policies respond automatically to work overseas and there's a lot of 'gaps' between statutory EL cover in the UK and work carried out outside of the defined territories.

You'd not want to be quadraspazzed by a stray Palestinian rocket and have no cover whatsoever.

Old posts, but...

Quote:
Ashkelon is about 20 km away from the Gaza Strip and the Gaza strip militants have only a very limited number of missiles which can reach that far (although they are working on expanding their range). Hence, whereas Sderot has been hit by about 8,000 missiles so far, Ashkelon has had less than 10. All these missiles are very inaccurate, and the inaccuracy increases with range. Thus far, Ashkelon is reasonably safe to visit.

Quote:
Sderot can be fired at not only by missiles but also by mortars and sniper guns.

How many extra ponds are they paying you to go there?

If you do go, I'd be doing some research to find about fucked up laws they have so that you don't end up falling foul of anything. They're not quite as backwards as the UAE but unless you fancy wining a free stay in some aids infested prison, it'd be handy to know what's frowned upon in their country.

This is worth installing on your phone before you go as it gives a bit of advanced warning of any rockets coming your way.

Seriously, Israel can be a great country to visit, sderot maybe not the best place to go but if you can put politics aside you'll find most Israelis are ordinary people who just want to get on and enjoy life. It's just a massive shame that there are such arseholes in government spoiling things for everyone. Go for it.

Colleague of mine that went recently said they stamped the visa on a piece of paper attached to his passport to stop him having hiccups elsewhere.

One of my friends recently when to Israel, Turkey and Georgia on holiday, he had a great time.

Personally I'd love to go there for the psytrance scene. Apart from being hideously expensive (or so I gather) I'd would be cool to live there for a few months!

+1

Always thought it a little odd that such a society could foster a thriving EDM culture, would sure be good to see it up close.

I thought a few days ago that especially given their conscription of young adults, there must be a sizeable chunk of their army at any one point that is going to raves and dropping acid. Laughing

Having smoked a cigarette on the Shankal inadvertently lit by a match from a box with an Irish tricolour on it. I'd be up for Israel.

They have a system that shoots down most of the shitty Chinese rockets now (Iron Dome?Iron Shield?). Just MTFU and get the job done it's not a war zone and walking down certain parts of Belfast wearing the wrong footy shirt is probably more dangerous.

Do ensure your employer will replace your passport though an Israeli stamp will get you turned away from a number of the camel-fucker countries.

My parents have been to Israel and Palestine several times over the last few years, they both went for the first time together 3 years ago, didn't want to both go together until my sister was 21 and finished uni... "just incase"... but they're fine still.

Wasn't a holiday mind you.

For the most part they said it was fine, it's the bad stuff that makes it into the news, so thats all you ever really see. But in reality its not the same.

Was in Northern Cyprus last month, what they did there was give you a visa on a sheet of paper that you simply carry with your passport, that gets the entrance and exit stamps. I think this is fairly common, my sister went to Cuba and she said something simmilar.

Tbh it wouldn't bother me having an Israeli stamp, apart from Turkey I'm not likely to go anywhere Muslim.

My friend has been there twice for work. He said he never felt in any danger but that was the least of his concerns. He said it was too hot, there were stray dogs everywhere, the people were rude and the food was shit. All in all I got the impression it's bit of a dump. But I've never been so can't confirm.
