screwdriver... that requires more skill and know how than any other method available..

these are pretty idiot proof.. it wont apply any turnin force till its on tight.

I`ve got the blue one ... you`ll need a ratchet & extension bar from a socket set.

Heat could help, warm up the engine. Thumbs Up

The screw driver trick, well, in 9 out of 10 cases it works like charm, but that 1 case may result in having a oil filter torn apart, yet still attached to your bike, and then what? Smile

I've got this:

oh yes it will .. the flexibility of the fabric strap will allow tighten around the deformation before any turning force is applied.

If a filter is so stuck that it disintegrates with a screwdriver, could you have got it off successfully by any other method?

I ask because I've had one that I struggled with for a good hour with tape and that strap thing, wrestling and tapping away at it, and it wouldn't budge.

What else should I have tried before going for the screwdriver?

I'll be honest and state I just go directly to screwdriver if they don't undo by hand.

If I put them on initially, they invariably undo by hand although I usually make sure it's clean and put on a grippy pair of gloves. Remember to oil the o-ring and do it up hand-tight when replacing it.

Every strap I've bought has been crap, bought some filter pliers off eBay and they're brilliant, takes them straight off.
Same as these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/201065828396?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=t&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

Can you get an oil filter socket on the back of it?

If not, I tend to use an oil filter chain wrench - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-77584-Capacity-Filter-Wrench/dp/B0001KA1YE/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1422019997&sr=1-1&keywords=oil+filter+chain+wrench

The chain grips, the serrations on the tool dig in, filter undone. More effective than a screwdriver, which will just rip through the metal of a really stuck filter.

I'm going for the screwdriver when I get home from work, I think i'll try tapping the rolled lip where it seals on the engine with screwdriver plus hammer anti clockwise. If that fails I'm shanking the thing

If screwdrivering it,I used drive straight through it with a big driver then lever it off.

I can't guarantee all canister oil filters are the same, but I once managed to remove one on a car that the owner had totally mangled.

I used an old wood chisel to chop off the top part of the canister, pulled the paper filter out with pliers, and found it easier to lever around the base of the filter, to break the seal between the filter seal and the engine block.

Made it easier to tap it around anti-clockwise from above, as there wasn't very good access from the sides.

I made a bad day much worse with a screwdriver.

The screwdriver tore the filter apart, leaving a sharp stub seized to the oil cooler. Chisel on the lip anti CW got it off eventually.

I like the socket style filter tools now, all of the bike filters I've needed to use have been the same size (all 600cc +) and fit the socket thing I got free with a honda filter.
Saying that I have a chain tool for car filters which I haven't had any issues with, even those seized quite badly on neglected cars.

Yes.

It's how I removed my screwdrivered stub of an oil filter (see post above yours). It's not ideal.

Easy to damage the oil cooler mating surface.

It does work, but I have never had to do it on a filter I have fitted.

I use One Of These and never had a problem, as long as the canister hasn't been mangled beyond recognition.

What do you recommend first though, the chiesel method or the screw driver through the side?

Whatever looks easier to you. Just take care not to poke the screwdriver through anything expensive.

If one method doesn't work, try the other.
