Hi guys,

New to the forum and yet to pick up my yamaha DT I've just purchased but was wondering if anyone had an prior experience with them and long trips. I'm based in Cambridgeshire and plan to visit places such as the Lake District, Mount Snowdonia and even venture up to Scotland this year with a friend who will be on a Honda MSX 125. I've been driving for four years but need the freedom of a bike. This years the year. So yeah, any Yamaha Dt125R owners or other 125'ers let me know how you've gotten on Smile.

- Got a Yamaha DT125RE 2007.

Shouldn't be a problem if it's well fettled. I knew someone who regularly did weekend rallies up north on a KMX125, from London. He used to start out with a load of guys on bigger bikes. He'd get left well behind, but he still got there.

Used to have an 07 RE also, any distance is fine if you are patient, it's pretty relaxed engine tune wise, wouldn't worry about putting miles on it. Only thing you have to keep in mind is not running out of 2 stroke oil but I'm sure most petrol stations will stock it.

Comfort would be the main issue, although I think your pal will have it worse Shocked Fortunately the tank range on your bike won't be great, so you'll have plenty of breaks, I think my DTR did around 45MPG, where as a Grom will probably do 100MPG. So planning fuel stops is usually the limiting factor on long rides. If you stick to main roads it will be a bit boring, and I suspect the Grom will start struggling on hills and once HGV's are quicker than you it starts to get dangerous, they don't like braking. Once I derestricted my DTR it did about 85, had no problems at all with hills or anything, would recommend it if yours will not pull much over 65, that's how mine was when I got it. (not legal, mind Police )

Brilliant thanks guys.

Yeah was thinking the only thing I would need is some 2 stroke in the bag. Now thinking of getting a streamline Jerry can just in case I don't get to a petrol station in time. The Grom has surprising pick up for its size.. But yes, wont be 'off roading' as such.

The one I'm getting has a DEP but I don't think its had the wire done or power valve. Both of which I plan to do at some point. It's only got 3.4k on it. Getting it next Wednesday and can't wait!

Quick question also; Where could i get black plastics for my Yamaha? It's blue at the moment, thinking of spraying it but don't want to loose the DT logo on the sides.

Cheers

I bought one new on a W prefix.. binned the original expansion chamber and fitted a fresco keepin the original exhaust and jettin..
it would pull an indicated 80mph and returned 55mpg or there abouts.
not a long distance tool, I went from Luton to Ace café onto Box hill fuelin up at the garage near by and return one sunday whilst down south .. that was quite far enough.. interestin bein on the M25 on a 125cc .. had the throttle pinned to about 90% as it went slower if fully opened Question only time the temp needle went almost into the red Laughing
motul semi 2 stroke oil 2L. used to last over 1000miles & the tank holds 2L. iirc.
and it came fitted wit a power valve servo as standard... the restriction was in the expansion chamber as a washer restrictor.

what your thinkin is do-able good luck ..I would travel on sundays and mid week between rush hours.... but not summit I would ever consider then or now Thumbs Up

Well personally I would say anything between about 200 and 300 miles depending on the roads and conditions (and how early you set off in the morning). Certainly less distance than you would manage in the car but you will get to enjoy the journey more, providing it is a nice day.

If I was doing the destinations you say, I'd plan an overnight stop, even if I were doing it on a big bike. You can carry luggage on a DT, you can get a rack and mount a topbox, and have a backpack resting on the passenger seat, or strap down a dry bag.

I toured over a lot of england, wales, and ireland with mine. But imo don't try and do too much in one day or it won't be enjoyable.

Top notch comments guys.

Kind of just what I wanted to hear. I plan to camp along the way (if its nice) or stay in an inn. Take a few days and just go somewhere. This seams like the perfect bike for a CBT anyway.

Copycat, where did you get the new fresco expansion chamber?

Cheers guys

I did a few 200 mile + days on my DT125R, like anything like that sitting for an hour at 70mph gets a bit wearing, and it does that instant loss of power thing when it's reserve time, which can be interesting if in the middle of something.

I'd have to stop for fuel every hour or so anyway and would stretch my legs for five or ten minutes and feel ready for the next bit. I did not like it if I was feeling tired, but that could happen on any bike I guess.

I de-restricted mine too (when it was 2 months old!), you just turn the power valve round (or did on the old ones).

I bought a black painted item to draw less attention to it as the standard is also painted black.

https://www.rawpowermotorcycles.co.uk/PBSCCatalog.asp?ActionID=67174912&PBCATID=2207328&PBCATName=Yamaha%20Big%20One%20Performance%20Exhausts

https://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?catref=523981&tier1url=Exhausts&tier2url=Exhaust-Systems-and-Silencers&tier3url=Big-One

these are the items but I ordered from my local dealer in Newcastle ..
but it was 15 years ago...
so I suspect your gonna have to order on-line
I know it says Big One not Fresco but I was told that it was manufactured by them...
anyway it worked spot on with the front pipe it was just a straight swop no re-jettin or anything and 55mpg... legal quiet aswell

I would give the exhaust pipe a miss ..you will need to re-jet (needle jet) too much Fff on if you ask me.
Too much torque lost from the bottom end and fuel was down to 35mpg..
with only 10mph extra (ie. 90mph. top end if it felt like doin that) than just fittin the front pipe which pulled 80mph and would do it 99% of time.. again not worth fittin the loud exhaust and the noise was gonna get me Police
