What does it mean when the bike has a "noisy top end"?
What it need doing and how much will that cost?

Means knocking and banging/clattering come from the top half of the engine, and as for repair it depends whats up with it.
FYI, Most Kawasakis have noisy top ends from cold, just the manufacturing tolerances that is all.

Other things could be, the Cam Chain or the valves, the former is quite expensive to do so I am informed as it means splitting the engine, and the latter is quite a quick job to do maybe just a few hours to check the clearances.

Get used to it man. Most 50cc scooter are written off before they are a year old. Mine is 5 years old and still going although they arent built to last that long and so its slowley falling apart on me and im constantly replacing things as they go. Ive spent well over £1000 on the pile of shit now. Evil or Very Mad

Cheers Craig, you were right mate. It needs the valve etc checking. Between 4 - 6 hours apparently Shocked Mucho cash. Having the rear wheel bearings replaced at Carole Nash before they return it aswell. The rest will have to wait, 'cause I'm broke at the mo'. Hopefully it can wait 'til summer. Got to get new brake pads soon too! Brick Wall
