Im going to bite the bullet and book my mod one, but before I throw my hard earned £200 for mod 1 does anyone have any experience with either of the two schools in Wigan, Bike Smart or Wigan Rider Training??

Thanks

I'm glad you've posted this because I'm in that same area(ish) (Bolton) and I'm looking for somewhere to do my training/DAS.

I've heard Wigan Rider Training is good and have good value courses (lessons, mod 1&2 included in price) and have just got brand new Yamaha MT07s which are good bikes!

I recommend Focus rider training, used to be in Bolton but now at Gig Lane football ground in Bury.
Contact details are in signature.

Not sure how easy it is for you to get across tho.

If you're willing to travel a bit, Kevin at ridertrainingnw is who I passed with and can't recommend him enough, he's an absolute legend.

Wouldn't want to do my mod 2 in Wigan, all those one-way systems! Southport's a piece of piss to ride around.

I got a quote for Mod1 from Wigan Rider Training......£225 + test fee, really all that for 20 min riding around a circuit with cones, I don't mind a couple hundred for the mod two plus fees but that sounds a bit silly. Am I just being tight?
I am thinking of buying a bike and seeing if my current insurers Swinton will cover me for a test day on the mod one.
Ive done nearly six years on my 125`s and without being cocky Im bloody sure I can ride round some cones by now and have done the swerve test numerous times, tonight being the latest on a mini roundabout when the driver didn't give way.
I wish the old system was still in place.

You mention you've been on 125'cc for quite some time.. is that with an A1 license or continuous CBT's?

If you have an A1 it may be worth mentioning as you've done the course before and now what to expect.

I was also in the same boat as you this morning, I woke up had a training school telling me that one day of training and the test at the end of the day is all that's required.. £160 went to book it today and got told that I needed at least a day and a half before they would even consider putting me in for a test.

(Now.. you won't be able to do this sadly) but I thought the new £250.50 was far to much and wasn't justifiable, spent £15.50 to book my own 125cc in for a Module 1 test, £75 for my own 125cc on a module 2.. witch for all less than £100 has all the same benefits, unless it's the full A license i'm not interested in donating my money for something I'd have to repeat two years latter anyway or when chosen.

Hi
Thats with CBT`s, a day and a half with test is what Ive been quoted as well.
I love riding the bike and have seen a ZZR600 that looks ok, but its hard to justify the mod 1 price and another £3-400 for mod two, ffs i passed my LGV first time I took it.
I may well just buy the bigger bike do what jobs may need doing and then sell the CG and do test, but I will still see about doing mod 1 on my own bike unless I find somewhere else for a good bit less.

I assume you're around the 22/23 year old mark.. would it not be better to wait until you're 24 and gain the full A license while spending quite a bit of money as opposed to wasting money on the A2.

Attempting both the mod 1 and mod 2 on your own bike for under £100 might be a better short term choice if you really want a full license, it may also show training schools your capable of passing tests on your own and convince them to let you do only a days training, or half a day.

Commuting to a module 1 on your own bike will cost £15.50 and will require you to book it yourself, also be aware if you pass then the module 2 must be taken on the same engine size bike meaning that you'd be going for the A1 as opposed to A2 license.

Whatever you chose remember to phone the insurance company and ask what cost would be charged to change your provisional to a full license, tell them you want a theoretical quote and not actually changing it over.. I personally have around 4-5 years before I qualify to take the full A test.. this means that I have plenty of time to have held a full license, decrease insurance costs and gain NCB.. all in all when I get round to eventually getting a "bigger bike" it will hopefully be pennies in comparison to what I would be charged if I was to attempt to insure a "bigger bike" at the end of my current policy.

Also be aware that if I had gone with the training school and waited to take the day and a half / test with the school they wanted me to wait until the end of April.. went online and booked my Module 1 for the 31st of this month.

Make your choice fast as the next dates after that where the end of April.

I wont even make your eyes water and tell you how much more than that mine is.

I must have got mistaken then my apologies, I assume you where looking at the Module 1 for the full A license?

If so in that case just save the required amount of money and get er done, don't faf about with the A1.. I assumed it was A2 and where having to wait..

Think about it, once you've done your A.. you don't have any more tests to do, worth investing to insure you get it right first time.. think of the freedom in terms of bikes afterwards.

Focus usually have you in for an assessment (they do charge for their time & fuel - offer to do it on your own 125 if they say they'll have you on a 125 for it)

They knock the cost of this off your training, if they feel you only need a half day for the mod 1 they'll usually just do that. Like all instructors, they'd prefer to be certain you'll pass rather than 'risking it'

Depending where you are, you could get the ZZR and sort it if an instructor is willing to come out to you so you can do the prep and test on your own bike.

Although the this isn't my thread I'm going to say thanks for the information. They sound like a decent company to go with! Thumbs Up

I don't get any benefit from it, just it's nice for them to know they're being recommended.

They've just launched 'lady biker' - 1-to-1 female biker tuition incase anyone's mrs wants to join the fun.
