Can anyone advise me about combating rust inside a S/H fuel tank for an EN 500? I've sluiced it through comprehensively with paraffin for some now, and there are still bits of rust in the bucket afterwards. Any advice gratefully received! Stewart

Various options depending on how bad it is..

Not much rust generally clean tank: - shake about with a few handfuls of washed gravel, rinse then use an in-line filter

Far bit of rust but no pin holes:-

Chemicals - Citric acid (mild) as used in domestic descaler - wilko sell it, Hydrochloric acid (sronger) as used in brick cleaners

Electrolysis - lots of articles online works ok but takes time.

Lots of rust & leaking - clean-up as best you can using above method dry thoroughly and line with POR-15 or whatever is latest flavour of the month, or solder or send of rewelding..

Thanks for this, J. Doesn't look like I need to use sealer/liner then. I tried that on a ZX400 tank with pinholes once, and it didn't work anyway!

I remember seeing another article where a guy managed to get his tank inside a tumble dryer packed with cushions - he had previously added gravel (acquaruium pebbles ?) and taped up the holes - he then ran it on the cold setting Shocked ..

A length of chain dropped into the tank also works well, and easy to fish out afterwards with a wire coathanger.

Could look at Deox-C which is a rust killer.

Make up a solution inside the tank and leave it a while to kill all the rust. Or if the outside is rust too, just drop the whole tank in the stuff.

Bottle makes 20 litres of solution that can be re-used until its turned black.

Use google for reviews Wink

me personally would be looking at getting a replacement tank - if possible.

i had my tank soldered then sealed using petseal, which melted - causing even more issues
