Hi need some help please wiring up my sons quad, it's lekie start.
When i got it the harness could only be decribed as a rats nest, so i basicly choped it off and got a new one. Iv got a little knowlage of wiring but this is doing my head in. Basicly iv got the cdi pluged in, the starter motor hocked up but cant for the life of me figer out the wires from the stator Confused Thay dont match the wires on the harness, i know whitch wires go ware on cdi but comming from the engine theres 2 yellow, a blue/white (iv allready connected) and a black. Also how to wire up tje start button and kill switch, i havent got a rectifier yet but shouldnt it start without it. Any help would be amazing. And thank you in advance. Also dont know if it helps but its a chinese quad Confused

pics pics pics pics pics and more pics.......an occasion a scotch may help.

get a wiring diagram........

so, start with the simplest system........the starter motor........

it may have a disable system so you cannot whizz the starter motor over if the bike is in gear, with the clutch out....meaning if its in gear the elecy starter will only work if the clutch is pulled in ( so it wont start and shoot off!! ).

is there a clutch switch/gear indicator.....2t or 4t??

once tyou have a starer system then go to the ign system,,,,but get a red neon plug cap for visual indication..........

pics pics pics........

You need a rectifier, it will probably go between the loom and the stator.

The stator will be throwing out probably 40v AC you don't want that near the cdi etc.

You'll be wanting a regulator as well, a rectifier by itself won't help.

Edit...

I'm going to make some assumptions here, rightly or wrongly.

On most of the chinese stuff I've seen, the 4 wires from the stator are:

Yellow x 2 (or yellow and pink) = AC output, goes through rectifier and regulator to battery (not always switched).

Black (sometimes brown) = Some earthing point.

Blue/white (mostly) = Ignition sense wire to CDI.

'Most' of the chinky quads are auto (kind of) or semi auto so there will be no clutch switch, they usually have a rear brake interlock though (won't start without brake held in).

If it's just a case of wanting to get it to fire up first, don't connect the 2 yellow ones at all, put a bit of tape over the ends.

There should be a kill wire from the CDI, the killswitch (and ignition if fitted) simply grounds this wire to turn the CDI off.

The starter circuit usually goes - battery +ve / ignition switch (if fitted) / interlock / start button / starter motor->earth through case to complete circuit.

They're pretty simple, get some pics up and a wiring diagram will be an easy proposition to sort.

Sorry should of been more persific, it's a 4t auto, no key.basicly pit bike engine. iv unpluged the safety wires for the rear brake (will it need them pluged back in. The harness i got is a basic electric start one so dont know if its got all the cut out wires on it) iv got most of the wires attached its just the ones from stator, push start and kill switch. I did connect the bw/w wire up and the black then tried jumping it from the solinoid to see if it would spark but neva. So i will need a rectifier/regulater (thay both usely come as one for these) before it will spark then. And will it fire up without the safety thing on the brake pluged in? Will take some pics and post them soon.

You will 'probably' have to short the wires to the brake interlock (or short them) as they 'usually' work by completing a circuit to allow it to start.

It should start and run with no problems without the reg/rec connected (just leave those yellow wires hanging).

Apart from that, without pics (or far more detail) of what you have and where it's a bit of a guessing game.

Also all the electrics are new now apart from the magneto, is there any way of checking this with a voltage meter? I can get the engine turning over by bridging the starter solinoid (relay)

Hi dont know if this is any help but tried testing the magneto today, i earthed the black and put the red on the blue/white wire and jumped the starter motor and the reading was 0.04. Would that mean i will need a new magneto? I realy need some help soon as i dont have the funds at the moment to take it to some one to sort out, thank you in advance.

I dont think it has a 'magneto' as such I reckon it has an alternator and pulser
like most bikes nowadays and the simple initial tests for these are usually resistance tests
Where are you ?
you may find an electrically competant member close by who can run a meter over it and help sort out what goes where for tea and sarnies
Its all pretty simple to map out, im doing it on a cheap 125 we picked up here at the mo.

And for your information boozehawk just cuz i got my boy a chinese quad dont mean i got no money. Son used to have an lt50. And i used to have a klf with a kx500 engine in it. But due to ill health iv had to give up working (whitch i garentee i earned in week what u make in a month if u do work?) And had to sell both quads to surport my family and keep a roof over our heads. So why should my son suffer and not be able to do what he loves because of me, so what if its a cheap bike at least he can still ride. And is your life realy that shit and meaningless that you got to go round insaulting 4 year old kids. U need to grow up mate and stop smoking all ur child tax credits or dole.

Calm down. I was making a joke related to the abundance of quads (ratty or otherwise) that get hooned around on by pikeys. I have no interest in your personal life problems or work history, earnings or tax bill. Of course if you are one of those idiot parents (which I assumed you were not) who equip their child with a quad bike then let them fly around the locality as a hazard to themselves and others then I hope social services see sense and remove said child from your care. Again I'm assuming your not.
