32bit W7 update today

Not sure what happened with this, but my ten year old (!) desktop with not quite legal version of didn't want to start after installing.
Went through some fault finding rigmarole, no restore point found, sorry cannot fix the problem etc
So pulled the plug and it started OK after some further installing action. Question

Seems normal now and says it did install updates.
I have a disc so could probably have repaired from that if it was flucked

It's my playing about machine anyway and has had linux on it before.
When I got it, it was XP with 256mb ram Laughing

The linux was definitely more hassle - if you actually wanted to do anything on it ....

Linux it is. Or, there are people that sell ''used'' Windows OS's. My dad bought w7 the other day. You get the DVD with Windows + certificate saying that it was used, by some corporation, and is now legal to own in the EU, blah blah, it was cheap. 35 pounds or so, not sure. Thumbs Up

Seriously Shocked I've used Linux exclusively now for about ten years, both at home and at work, as a server and a desktop. On the rare occasions I revisit Windows I find that O/S to be the pain in the neck. Desktop Linux has come on leaps & bounds in recent years, you might want to revisit Linux Mint.

The massively technophobic girlfriend appears to have appropriated my Eee, which runs kubuntu, for her uni work. It appears to be popular as it doesn't screw up in weird and wonderful ways. Spends most of its life on standby, goes for months without a reboot.

Would probably recommend mint now, its less weird than straight Ubuntu, anything that uses gnome 3 and less sophisticated and resource intensive for no discernable reason like KDE.

Replacing the Sempron 3000 desktop that ran xp with a windows 7 box surplus from my studio was a string of domestics.

I run a mixture of Linux Mint Debian and Linux Mint. My wife uses Linux Mint. We are both anything but computer geeks and we both find Windows fussy and difficult to use.

Have to agree.

Nothing totally compatible with office, no Solidworks or Autodesk inventor.

No photoshop or lightroom, no support for mathcad either.

Linux is great if you want to do 1 specific task that it is suited to, or if you just want to browse and do general word processing with no regard for compatibility.

I think you'll find it's Microsoft who has no regard for compatibility. They still fail to adhere to the Open Document Format despite it being open source. They're the one that's failing to adhere to the majority of platforms, no the majority of platforms failing to adhere to Microsofts.

EVERYBODY, I send a document too uses Word. While I can send a *.doc to anybody and most open office suites can open it. They fail down at complex formatting options.

My only choice for use of office is Mac or Windows, since Mac's are overpriced and also have no support for any of the other products I mentioned (minus the adobe stuff) then Windows is the only OS that does what I need.

In addition, it is faster than OSX and Linux, and is also far more reliable.

I don't understand how so many people manage to break Windows so much.

a .doc or a .docx? How many times have you had the layout of your document wrecked becasue you saved as .doc for 'compatibility' despite said set of formats having long been depricated?

What about sending files between different versions of office? Powerpoint is particularly evil for this, to the point where it's easier to bring your own device and hope it works with the projector where you are going. I've had 20 years of using office and it not being compatible with itself. It's a joke.

I don't think i've ever done CAD on a windows machine. Do they work for that? Ok, i've not used SDRC I-DEAS since it became Siemens NX...

Recording studio runs linux. When I made web applications, all the backends were linux. The development environment was linux, the only windows involved was running IE off of wine or a virtual machie as it was the easiest way to get every version of IE back to 5 running on the same machine. I have a load of old software for synths that wont work on windows newer than 98 (or sometimes 3.1), so all of that is beaten into working through wine or in a VM.

Fortunately lots of the software I use has been ported to windows and/or OSX so the argument doesn't work in reverse.

You might as well complain that your iphone software doesnt work on android (also linux btw) or the software on your router/hub doesnt run on anything else (possibly linux, maybe a less sophisticated RTOS)

So what do I actually have a windows box for? Games. But most of them are steam and will likely run on a linux box if I tried, SteamOS anyone?

Your argument is windows is better because a few named bits of software aren't available for windows? I put it to you that windows is a broken and insecure environment that enforces its market position by being incompatible with everything including itself.

Just about every government in the world is on the way to making ODF their standard format, including the UK.

The two reasons I switched from Windows to Linux were the appalling unreliability of Windows and it's sheer snail paced speed at doing almost anything intense, especially when it comes to shifting data around on file systems. Added to that is Microsofts' habit of depreciating technologies and breaking perfectly good bespoke applications, lack of backward compatibility, and the sheer ease with which users can bugger up their desktops, wild horses wouldn't drive me back to it.

Same here, I can now get on with doing what I'm paid to do - writing applications, instead of continually fixing desktops and re-writing old stuff because MS have pulled the rug from under me.

Apple have totally depreciated products within 3 years of release.

My mrs uses macbooks, when she got the new iPhone 5, not compatible with her version of iTunes. So she needed to update, did update to new version of iTunes, this updated, then decided it wasn't compatible with her version of OS X so removed all access to the old phone also.

Ok, not a problem, the OSX version required was available on Apples Mac OSX App store. Apart from her version didn't have that, so needed to be updated to a different version of OSX by CD which meant waiting for a few days to receive it from Apple, then update to that. Following that, update to the newest OSX to finally use the phone and iPad.

Conversely, I plugged her phone into my Windows machine and it worked first time.

So yes, in that case Microsoft had better compatibility with an Apple product, than Apple had with their own products.

Never mind the fact that within 3 years Apple had removed all compatibility for nearly all useful apps for the original iPad.

I don't understand how you can complain about Microsoft, when I am able to run 10+ year old software under Windows.

Again, unless you're doing a specific task Windows is very good, I have had experience of various Linux distributions, and OSX. But in terms of compatibility, reliability, and performance, Windows is on top.

People slate Windows as it's also the choice of retards who have zero ability to maintain a computer. It is rare to see any reliability complaints from a competent computer user of Windows.
