Hi

I've had a bike crash and I am looking for an official BMW mechanic in London - if there is such a thing. Which one would you recommend?

Sorry someone else will have to help with London BMW assistance but I do hope you are ok after the crash, is it bad? Confused

After a couple of months on BCF is it too early in my forum career to demand pics and full crash story with drawn diagram? Very Happy

Is this an official BMW mechanic or simply one that specializes in BMWs? I know this kind of "official" factor exists for buying a bike. Does it also exist for repairing one?

As for the crash information, I have a blog to which I will add the full story soon. I'll post here when it's up. However the bike basically just fell over after being rear ended. No explosions, no air was gotten Wink.

AFAIK, there is only one 'official' BMW bike dealer in London, which is Park Lane.

Mark Holden (MH) used to run the workshop at Normand Mobike, which was a BMW 5 star dealer, back in the day when there were lots of BMW bike franchises and they ran a manufacturer approved star system, 5 being the highest and rarest.

Not sure why you feel the need to visit an official BMW dealer, unless you have a penchant for paying far too much for everything, but that being the case, Park Lane is your only option.

Yes you got me. That is the reason why I want it official.

I know it's tempting to assume that everybody who does something that is not perfectly transparent for oneself is stupid or an idiot but surprisingly I am actually neither of those.

Rolling Eyes

I was in an accident 100% caused by another driver. My bike was in perfect condition before and has a clean BMW dealer service history (outside of London). The other drivers insurance will pay for all the repairs on my bike since he is liable and it was his fault. I am not a bike expert so I have to trust certain standards if you will an I want to make sure that everything is in the same BMW condition it was before. Thus the most obvious way in my position for making sure that I get the best care for the bike is to go with official approval manufacturer approval.

Another question:

dealer = mechanic?

I would answer this question for myself with no but the above posts made me thing otherwise.
I thought I need to look for mechanics shops that are licensed by BMW but I need to look for motorcycle dealers? (Or apparently only this one motorcycle dealer in London who will repair my bike?)

Assumption that main dealer is better than a decent independent specialist - they are more expensive for sure and you might get a nicer courtesy bike and possibly better coffee in the waiting area.

Assuming you are going to use genuine BMW parts - it's down to the quality of work and the skill of the people / person(s) doing the reassembling.

Main Dealers do not always fall into a skill level commensurate with their labour rates!

Nice coffee and glossy showroms do need paying for though.

I would get a quote from the Dealer ( and ask to see examples of previous work ) and also from one or more of the good indies - asking the same question and decide who you want working on your bike.

Is this that tit for tat pannier damage from the other day. I doubt his insurers will pay, you'll get 50/50 maybe.

Nothing wrong with non BMW either. They will pay out a reasonable amount to repair the bike but going to BMW they'll write it off due to the price of repairs. You'll then have a lower value bike.

Independents and non-main dealers don't usually give you a courtesy bike whilst yours is being repaired though.

This is for the no-speed lay-down of your built-to-be-dropped 'adventure' bike that it took on the panniers?

And you've turned it into an insurance job that may mean missing out on a planned Euro trip? And now want it to go to a BMW Motorrad for a full forensic examination because oh noes teh frame might be all bented? Shocked

Opinions may differ on that.

When it goes 50/50 the cost of your claim that you have to declare will fuck you in the arse so fucking hard because of your delusion that you're going to get lucky and win regardless.

My dad has been going to Jap and German for many years for his R1100S, I believe they're going to repair the damage for the recent theft too (you might even see his bike there if yours goes there too Laughing).

Not sure if the ship has already sailed so to speak, but I'm inclined to agree with the others, you should settle outside of the insurance on this one if possible.
