Ok so the Kymco's fixed up and MOT'd
lads done his CBT, got insurance and about to tax it

Sooo
I figured I'll do what I did with tother lad
Pick some quietish times and routes at first and ride 'shepherd' as he
gets some road time in to build experience and confidence

Overall plan: get on road, get some real time road experience in then do DAS
( and probably borrow my feckin bike)

I'd be interested in what others have done in similar situations

I'd say what you've suggested is pretty much spot on.

Only thing I'd add is that after you've ridden with him a few times, make him go out on his own and ride, as I'm sure this will boost his confidence more. Thumbs Up

I did some of the road ride of my CBT on my own bike. I'd made insurance arrangements, instructor met me at my place, we bimbled through the back roads for a bit and toured the roundabouts out by the airport until he was satisfied. Then we went back to the training school and my instructor told me I could have my certificate if I was happy to ride home. Apparently I turned quite pale. It was the kick in the ass I needed though.

My point: Take somewhere, then task with getting home unaided is a great confidence builder.

Particularly (as confidence and ability grows) unfavourable times of day, routes that would not otherwise be taken and less than ideal weather conditions.

A similar thing happened to me.

Did the CBT on my own bike, got my certificate and watched as my instructor rode away, leaving me in the middle of nowhere, with a MOTORBIKE Shocked

After a few minutes of sheer panic, wondering how the hell I was going to get the bike home and running all sorts of possibilities through my head, I came to the conclusion that the only option was I'd just have to ride it home.

I had to negotiate about half a dozen roundabouts too, which we hadn't done on the road training and needless to say I stalled it on at least half of them. Embarassed I also rode a fair bit out of my way to avoid a dreaded hill start on one of the junctions. In fact, I did that for about another two months. It was a very steep hill though. Laughing

How about you pick an interesting location that you both know (like somewhere that does decent bacon butties) about an hour's ride away, and take it in turns to lead the way - then if you are both happy with how it went, let him make his own way back.

Yeah that's the sort of thing.
Part if it is a shake down run for the bike itself since we fixed it up, so maybe I should
follow in the van Laughing ?
It's the fifty quid bike https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=301946
It starts and runs well and sounds fine but from tomorow
I'll jump on it myself an hack it about for a bit then bring it back and give it a once over.
If it can carry me about in a lively fashion it won't struggle with him
riding it ( its all relaxed muscle honest ! Embarassed )

Been doing this with my SO - picked some quiet routes that she knows well, let her ride in front and basically guard from behind - keep the other road users off her tail while she's getting comfortable..

Longest we have done so far is rivington which was about an hour and half each way, starts at 30mph but includes some 40, 50 and nsl roads, long enough for her to settle in and then enjoy it.

Did the same with a couple of the younger lads from work, they seemed to appreciate not having to worry about what was behind them, allowed them to focus on the task at hand.

Having someone that you trust guarding your rear end is an obvious benefit, but I also found it useful to follow a more experienced rider at times, as it helps you to gain confidence with road positioning.

Industrial estates at weekends are great for practicing. They often have large empty quiet car parks. Even though I have passed my test I still go and have a bit of a play especially the slow stuff.

Hello,

Remember doing this and always felt less confident when another rider was viewing me. Once I had done a fair few miles on my own on the 125 I felt better prepared to be critically analysed (slaughtered) by the instructor. And in your sons case his father Smile

Which is most confidence destroying? A dressing down from an instructor, or a dresing down from your dad?

I think it is important to make positive corrections - "try doing it this way" rather than "dont do it like that", particularly when trying to build confidence and enthusiasm.

I remeber having a blazing row with my dad when he was trying to teach me to drive because he accused accused me of driving like an old man and then refused to explain what he meant. I suppose it didn't help that i considered him an old man and he drove like he eas trying to make up for a failed rallye driving career. After about 20 minutes of him screaming at me whilst I was trying to safely navigate his prized volvo t4 through nottingham traffic, i found some entertaining nsl and got a bit of a move on. Then I had to pull over for him to puke.

And that is part of the story as to how I ended up briefly homeless at 17, and why it took until I was 28 to get a licence that wasn't provisional.

What I done was:

A-B : main route/end destination
C/D/E.... : Places where you should pass or stop in for petrol etc.

So say it was a Callender run up here it would be

A-B : Stirling - Callander (easy run basically 1 road),
C : Blair Drummond.
D : Doune
B : Callander

You could always do the nice thing, ask him to pick a place to go to, get him to follow you there. On the way back, he takes the lead to get you two home.

I'd have to ride about 300 miles to get to you. Regional section would be better.
