As above. It's looks and sound for the street bike.
Manufacturers do what they have to do to get it through the legal hoops. We undo their good work ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

Standard exhausts are pretty good nowadays but most weigh a fecking ton I think a lot of people change for the sound and the weight saving ____________________ Beer, It's the reason I get up every afternoon

changed mine to a louder one for improved mid range (fzs 600) more noise so pedestrians stop walking infront of me and it weighs a hell of a lot less than the standard one. ____________________ GOOD GAME BODYGUARD: https://i.imgur.com/8WePGgf.jpg

Never really got this weight thing if you aren't racing. I saved 5kg on my busa changing the stock pipes to titanium Scorpions but the only difference I could really notice when riding was sound.
Anyway my present bike weighs 300kg, I don't think knocking a few kg off is going to make much difference. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

I don't want to get rid of my FZS 600 exhaust for saving weight. It just sounds like a turd in a washing machine.
Sound means a lot to motor enthusiasts. Just try watching motoGP or formula 1 on mute.
I want a nice sound while riding and a bit of presence on the road and for the sake of 300 quid why not if I can afford it. It's not like I'm buying a ford fiesta for 1k and putting 20k worth of shitting sound system in it |

But messing about with aftermarket or even one off custom exhaust pipes might gain me another 1bhp or so on my KMX, so it's inherently worth spending time and money on them, especially if it's a pipe made up of many rolled cones and welded beautifully, it's a work of art more than a pipe then! |

I changed the can on the last Fazer to match in with the carb and air box mods. With those, the bike needed a freer flowing, more efficient can. I actually changed the can before the mods were done, and did notice that it seemed to give a little more go at the top end, possibly losing a little lower down, but not enough to make any big difference.
Plus I liked the look of the replacement can, being a carbon finish which matched in with the carbon speed blocks in the paintwork.
The old can weighed a ton compared to the new, but I couldn't honestly say I noticed the difference while riding. The suspension mods I did made a lot more difference, and if you're going to be improving the handling, a saving of some kgs in weight can't hurt things.
And of course, whilst not being the loudest can available, it did sound much nicer.
But if you don't want to spend the money, nowt wrong with that. Horses for courses and all that good stuff, innit ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I do; however see the point in improving things but for the prices of some of them (Akrapovic and Yoshimura to name a few) is there really an need? Or is it merely for showing off? |
I think its a 'cultural' thing as much as anything.
In ancient times, bikes were built to be 'sturdy' & 'practical', and usually not all that exiting; tuning them for a bit more pep and modding them for better handling, an open up-swept exhaust would give more ground clearance for more exuberant cornering and aid a lumpy cam in getting smoke out the pot for a bit more power.
When the Japs started offering bikes that were slightly more 'interesting' without the price tag of an Italian exotic, the cost cutting saw exhausts made of thin, single skin mild steel, treated with skimpy fitting chrome, that tended to rot out, in UK climates, in about the time it took the first MOT to come due. Jap marketing of those days saw cheap bikes and expensive spares; which buoyed up the aftermarket, and 'pattern' pipes or 'performance' two-stroke expansion chambers and 4 into 1 systems, from folk like Micron or MOTAD (whose comment on the subject could be interesting); 1977 the UK C&U regs first set a decibel limit on exhausts, while in the US emission regulations started to be imposed, which started to hamper the state of tune manufacturers could supply a bike in; so in the muscle-bike era, after-market exhausts, could help find a bit more 'pep' as well as save some pennies come MOT time.
By the Mid 90's, as water-cooled engines came to the fore, allowing the manufacturers to beat noise and emission regs while still keeping up with the 'power race' for ever higher peak power numbers year on year; any 'performance' benefit an aftermarket exhaust system might offer was being significantly eroded; and in fact in some dyno shoot-outs, it was shown that most 'Performance Pipes' if anything caused a loss of power over stock systems; The 'best' full systems, might offer a 3-5% increase in peak power, but usually accompanied by a significant loss of mid-range, that often gave an 'illusion' of increased peak, through a stronger 'surge' of power coming out of the 'hole' of lost mid-range.
All 'open' end cans tended to do, was throw the jetting to pot, put flat-spots in the mid-range, and increase fuel consumption roughly proportionally to increase in noise.
YET.. folk carried on fitting after-market exhausts, on the historical legacy that they were a 'good thing' often believing that they MUST give them more performance... and probably still do!
Meanwhile, we have succumbed ever more to pre-packaged consumerism and the superficial values of aesthetics; and people seem to buy motorbikes more like they do shoes, with more concern about what they think they make them look like on the high-street than any real interest in the engineering or actual performance; and when the questions pop up about them, it is now far more common that they are being fitted for such venal reasons as how they sound or how they look, rather than what they actually do! So maybe not bought just for 'showing off' but certainly like a pair of Nike-air trainers.. it's the 'done thing' in company! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
