Well should I?

Considering there are lots of unsavoury individuals attempting to get into the UK. Should I go through Calais? Motorbike seems a tad vulnerable.

I think it would be quite difficult for an asylum seeker to find a place to hide on your motorbike.
I would just get on with it and not hang about there.

I haven't seen a single prospective asylum seeker on any occasion I've gone through the Eurotunnel, and I've gone through Calais town centre several times too.

French Police stopping you to look you up on their system for any unpaid speeding fines is a bigger risk. I've been stopped once, and I've seen police around Calais 3 other times. Nothing found, mind, but a minor hassle giving details etc.

Are you concerned about leaving the bike unattended for a time when you are in Calais ?

If you are just passing through then I cannot see a reason for concern.

I saw my first on the way out of the tunnel exit (just after the petrol station on the left) about a week ago. One and only after multiple trips. Of course, I don't take the boat.... I dare say around the ports they will be everywhere.

No trouble driving around at 2am a year and and a half ago in my van looking for a petrol station that'd take cash.
No trouble going back at 5pm or something, though I didn't stop.

Just came back through Calais and there was no trouble.
We stayed in a hotel within the centre and hardly saw any of the beggars. Plus with the amount of police they would be silly to do anything. Even Sangatte was showing little immigrant life.

Never even seen an asylum seeker in Calais in the times I've been there. I've even camped a few times at the Municipal camping site which is looks pretty ghetto like.

What on earth are you expecting people seeking a better life in the UK to do to you whilst on your motorcycle?

Had my top box searched last time I went through. I pointed out the four wheel drives, estate cars, vans and lorries might be better at carrying stuff through but that didn't go down too well.

No immigrants were found...

Well my experience was a little different to the rest. Returned through calais at 6.30am sunday morning. Rode past a large shanty town near the docks full of asylum seekers living in tents made of tarps, bin bags and cardboard boxes. Looked awful to be honest.

Got on the ferry and it was full of very dodgy looking people possibly romanian, kept an eye on them as they walked around looking at peoples bags, wallets, phones etc. To be fair they didn't actually do anything but it looked like they would if they could.

When I got to dover, riding up the a20 there is a layby full of trucks and shortly after that I passed a group of very dirty rough looking blokes walking up the hard shoulder who I'm pretty sure must have just got here illegally.

All that said I had no problems going in or out of calais so wouldn't worry about it if I where you!

Go with the Eurotunnel next time. We use it at least 4 times a year and never had a problem like that.

According to your book, you were shot at.

So why would going through Calais be a worry?

It's because that was 6 years ago when I was an impetuous young man.

Like many of the BCF I've calmed down and become more cautious as I grow older. I definitely have more things to lose than back then.

I mean just look at the 2007 tell us about yourself thread. How many don't post and or ride any more? Even the extreme risk taking R1 couple vanished.

Hell you and me are pretty much the only ones left from that time that post from that era with any regularity.
