I saw a cancellation at the weekend and went for my Mod 2 today and failed. Failing isn't ever enjoyable, however, I was actually quite pleased as I didn't make a complete mess of it and am actually quite positive about passing next time.

I haven't had any lessons and all my obs, lane positioning etc. were fine (the bits that I had some doubts about with all this OSM PSL stuff). The 1 part that I failed on was not recognising a road that I joined was a national speed limit and didn't go quick enough. Doh!

The only other aspect that I am beginning to dislike about the test centre setup (or perhaps just the examiner that I had?) is the surprised/shocked big deal he seemed to make of the fact that I didn't have an instructor and I wasn't using a 'School' bike (I had exactly the same reaction for Mod 1). Anyway..... only one more hoop to jump through and I'll be done. Smile

They do seem to want us to treat limits as targets. Ah well, easy win next time.

This is on your Fazer, right? Fu​ck him, plenty of us used to do it on 125s. Bigger bike is no different, as long as insurance is in place. How it's getting to and from the test centre is none of his business.

Instructor (or training school teacher) told me this while on my days training, got a little helping hand with the fact I was doing 55mph in the overtake lane of a NSL dual carriageway, mentioned the fact that you may be able to get away with on the test while in the overtake lane if the road behind you is clear.

Also get a helping hand with the fact that there where two cars tailgating each other in-front of me (left lane) I decided to take my usual option of hanging back and allowing space and watching what they where doing, apparently I'd got down to about 35-40mph before the instructor (training school teacher) decided to tell me to overtake.

Like borg says, one thing that come across on my day of training was that getting as close to the limit seems to be what they want, god knows how that works out as "testing that you're safe on the roads" but I think they just want a little action and to see you can go fast, in honesty it is slightly controversial as I'd personally call 10mph below the speed limit acceptable (my opinion), the limit is exactly that..

A past instructor (training school teacher) once told me that on the tests they're looking for confidence and aggression, not slow and sensible.. apparently they like to see you throw it around a bit.

Each time I have been to the test centre, there is always a feeling of not being 'in the club'. The examiners are chatting and joking to the instructors and I guess due to the regulations, they don't get many people anymore that try the diy approach. Anyway, I don't care as long as I get a fair test.

As for the speed thing, I left a housing estate and joined a road that for the majority of the time had lots of slow corners so speed wasn't an issue. It then straightened up and I started to think/wonder about the speed limit. I looked around and there were houses on my left and SOME street lights to my right and as I was on a test, the last thing I wanted to do was break the speed limit so I was cautious and got a serious fault for it. I've got no complaints with that at all. I will pay more attention next time and hopefully be more relaxed as I now know what the test is all about.

Just got to wait at least 10 days.....

I'll second that, I attempted the module 1 on my own 125 twice, on the second occasion when I asked what my test was like and how well I performed each maneuver he was like "if you want feedback go to a training school", it seemed as soon as he told me he'd failed he opened the door and said goodbye.

Yet I noticed how the pupil who before me went with the training school instructor into the room and passed was laughing and joking and smiling about how it was now time to relax and glad he'd passed.

Since I've had the same guy twice on my own bike it ad be interesting to see what it all be like when doing it through a training school.

The general opinion seems to be "fuck 'em" which is fine by be. Thumbs Up

There is always going to be the human element to the tests and even though there is a set standard, the interpretation of that standard will vary depending on the examiner (and potentially his/her mood/personality/sex life).

NJD - I had the "I recommend you get some training from a riding school" speech after my first mod 1 but just practised some more and went back and passed so that was good FU moment.

BodyGuard - I feel for you having to go through all those tests to get to where you are now. What an awful system, but at least it's all done now Thumbs Up

Had this feeling when I turned up at the actual test pad for some practice on my days training, was nice to be on the pad and get even more familiar without having some arse in a hi-viz and a clipboard analyze my riding.

Cracked all parts of the module 1 first time round bar the avoidance of which I'd only gotten two attempts on previously, took about 3 goes and had the speed down from there on out.

Hopefully all works out next month when I get to try in on the A2 bike.

The whole DIY path is good and all but for me it was towards the A1 not A2 or A and therefore made little sense, if I passed second time I'd off took it all the way but being stuck on a tiddler for more than 1-2 years is just painful in idea let alone having to actually do it.

First off well done for going for it at such short notice! Most people seem to fail the tests simply because they are bricking it. Being relaxed on the bike makes the whole thing a million times easier, you can give yourself more time to think about it all.

Sounds like you've already figured this out and I reckon with that attitude you'll pass next time round. If you don't it will probably be more down to bad luck than anything else.

I've said it before and I'll say it again the three most important tips for Mod 2:
1. Answer every instruction from the examiner with 'Aye aye captain!'
2. Sing a song you don't really know the words to.
3. Try not to look at the girls in short skirts.

These tips are less applicable to Mod 1 tests, apart from No 1.

I did my a1 on a painfully slow xt125. Zero shits were given by the examiner that I was on my own bike, or that it couldn't make it all the way to 60 on an nsl road.

You just got unlucky missing the sign. Rebook and pass ASAP

Obviously they're all consummate professionals who wouldnt let first impressions sway their examination. Or that they dont like the stickers on your lid. Its not like we can size up the examiner & say "na im sorry but he scares the fuck outta me.. I'm definetely more nervous now than I was & more likely to cock it up.. Can I be paired up with that librarian-looking chap over there instead?"
