So I have been on a bit of a getaway since friday. Done loads more motorway / NSL dual carriageway miles that I like doing, but gets me from place to place quickly. The 535 will just sit at motorway cruising speed without missing a beat until it is time to refill the pair of tanks that only manage 10 litres to reserve.

However I have developed a new pet hate. I first noticed it on the M42, if I had a clear bit of motorway and could cruise in the inside lane, or if I'd pulled in to let someone intent on making more rapid progress past me, I would get the occasional car overtake me very very slowly and then cut in front of me before slowing to below HGV speed. It's infuriating. Had more of it on the A46.

Why?

Are they suggesting the immense speed of my 535 is too much for the delicate flower perched behind me?

Have they confused my ride for a hardly movinson and taken it upon themselves to remind me my eyeballs might vibrate out at such immense velocity?

Have they taken the quiet whine of my Yamaha without the thundering potato sound to mean it's some kind of prototype electrical bike?

Are they just rubbernecking at my mighty steed and waiting for it to take off like a (very elderly and arthritic) scalded cat?

Is their poor little box on wheels tired and in need of a rest after giving chase to my 23 year old bike?

Is my dirty primer-red cruiseretter really that much of an attraction when mostly hidden by huge givi boxes, 6 foot of me and an only marginally smaller pillion, and a huge mra screen?

Should probably stay in lane 2. Heck, if you're doing an indicated 70, lane 3 is fine.

Pass the popcorn

It's not a sinister conspiracy, they're just idiots, probably geriatrics, who have been calling lane 1 the "slow" lane for so long that they've come to believe that it's true.

Try not to let yourself sink to their level, just use whatever lane is needed to do whatever speed you want.

drivers must be different down there, I like to use the left lane on motorways as it's the emptiest and the one where you can make best progress. Tut Tut

there's a magnetic underground strip in the middle lane that attracts cars and wont let them leave

You are Smiler and I claim my 5 ponds!

Seriously, like Roger said, don't get hung up on moving over all the time, no other bugger does (apart from the muppets).

Yeah - this has happenned to me a few times, and it is irritating to say the least.

Usually, I will be sitting at the speed limit and someone will overtake me at +15mph, then pull in and slow down to speed limit minus 10. I even had a cop car do it to me once - which made me question the accuracy of my speedo, until other drivers started overtaking us both.

In reality, it probably doesn't happen that often, it's just that you remember it more easily when it does.

It's not just bikes either - I have had cars, vans, tucks AND bikes do it to me when I have been driving a car, so it's not just you!

When this happens to me it's usually due to the overtaking car failing to plan ahead. They see the gap in front of me that'll fit their car and fail to realise that the gap is in fact the following distance between me and the car in front of me. So they slip in, realise they are now suddenly tailgating the car in front and slow down to create their own following distance Rolling Eyes

A bit puzzled by your situation though, since you said you've got a clear bit of road ahead of you. My guess is that the breakneck speeds required for overtaking was so overwhelming that the offending party had to slow down to get their bearings after overtaking you Laughing

That's not at all what I meant, I embrace the muppetry. Wink

Use lane 1 if you're not overtaking, but if some twunt pulls in and then slows down, straight into lane 2 and past them. Their inability to pick a speed is their problem, not yours.

Given my druthers I'd go with the Septic system of any lane for any purpose, but until then we've got some very simple rules to help us all get along. Let he who is without sin and all that.

Is it wise for me to admit on BCF that I googled cruiseretter to see if it was an actual make of bike. Embarassed

Funnily enough, the Septic System 'Any Lane will do' is not legal. Septics have to pass on the correct side (Left side, as they are a Nation of Idiots who drive on the right (incorrect) side of the road/highway).

Hmm, fair point.

Choosing A Lane

Traffic lanes are often referred to by number. The left or “fast” lane is called the “Number 1 Lane.” The lane to the right of the “Number 1 Lane” is called the “Number 2 Lane,” then the “Number 3 Lane,” etc.

Drive in the lane with the smoothest flow of traffic. If you can choose among three lanes, pick the middle lane for the smoothest driving. To drive faster, pass, or turn left, use the left lane. When you choose to drive slowly or enter or turn off the road, use the right lane.

If there are only two lanes in your direction, pick the right lane for the smoothest driving.

Do not weave in and out of traffic. Stay in one lane as much as possible.

Not too far off what we've got, but... overtake on the left but don't change lanes. For smoothness.

In practice and on admittedly short acquaintance it seems to be pretty much ignored. Every sod goes straight into lane 2 (as every sod does here) but there's a lot more weaving in and out and overtaking on the right (wrong) side apparent.

Then again I don't drive on motorways that often here so who knows what you road warriors really get up to.

They are probably not trying to slow you down but simply just cr@p drivers.

What's really annoying is when your driving a van when they do it and you pull out to overtake them and they suddenly wake up and speed up again.

This also annoys me, especially when I see it happen to others.

Often when I approach behind a car who is bimbling along in the wrong lane, failing to overtake, often going slower than the car in slow/middle lane. I approach, but not tailgate. If I want to pass I will lane split, no issues with that, I am quite fussy that I have adequate distance infront and behind me ... but not a shit given about to the sides Laughing

So rather than car apply throttle and patience to safely complete their pass, it will see my approach as justification to move over and cut infront of whatever is beside them.

Over use of the middle lane when the slow lane is empty is bad driving.
It's worse if you meet one of those idiots doing their indicated 60 (Probably 58mph) when you are towing a trailer or in an HGV and are prohibited from using the fast lane. (On three lane carriage ways).

I use the cover of other vehicles to make good progress. If the Po Po cannot see you then they cannot measure your speed. So I use all of the road.
And moving out the lane to negotiate hazards keeps one's attention sharp.

What's was the attitude like?

Some people may keep a steady throttle opening in aid of best fuel consumption, which can lead to varying speeds.

To conclude; get a better bike? Wink

The xv535 did quite well touring two up. I think on any bike I'd get to the point where the bmw/audi train arrives behind me at instaban speed and that is when I shift out of the way.

It's not an issue on crowded motorways, but then I'm swapping lanes for the emptiest and fastest moving lane. It's when the roads are quiet and I can bimble along as rapidly as I feel comfortable that this happens.

I think if I had a bike that would do another 20 or 30 mph without my worrying about the health of the vehicle, I probably would do so for as long as I kept my licence.

I do not mean indicated 70 by motorway cruising. I'd consider in some circumstances to be slow and obstructing traffic.
