Darned hard drives...

Had my first hard drive failure in years, fortunately it's the 2nd disk in a windows span so less on it, backed up nightly to a second span, and then monthly to my NAS but still a bit of loss and a pain in the arse.

Not sure if it was just old, the heat or something else.

Temp wise the max my cupboard where it lives gets to is 33degrees according to the thermostat, seems to average 27, currently sitting at 24. I think it's heat as i've been torrenting loads so the drives haven't had a chance to spin down during the day.

Might move my server into the garage.

Anyway cool story bro and all that.

I suspect this one is probably HOT, it's the latter part of the span and from what I've read Windows writes sequentially so the first drive will be full and anything new is on this drive.

As I torrent on the span all the activity will be on this drive, it's also the left middle drive so less ventilation.

According to Seagate tools its 30degrees but I don't really believe that.

They are 3yrs old and been in constant use, this one particularly so it doesn't really surprise me.

Any thoughts or tips?

Any recommendations? These are from the days of their Thailand factory when they were ok.

Got Seagate in the Nas which have been ok and in since 2006.

To be honest, I've only had 1 seagate fail on me. It was many years ago, a 250gb hdd, but then again I've only bought 3 over the years.

I've seen many fail in a business environment though.

3 years of hard use sounds about right if its 24/7 for a domestic drive. you could always try something like the icy box offerings for removable drive bays with an inbuilt fan to help cool things, but sounds like you've got a pretty secure data setup as far as backups go already. After 3 samsung HDD failures in 4 years I've given up buying the cheaper options they had and gone for a WD black with its 5 yr warrenty......not that Im expecting it to be 100% failure free in that time but at least I'll get a free replacement if it does go down

I have only ever had a single Seagate drive fail. run almost exclusively western digital drives. I have some here that are around 10 years old. while I have at least 6 that are in machines that run 24/7 they don't always see huge amounts of use while running.

I think I just pushed them to far in the heat.

Going to get a replacement at lunch time as the local place is only £3 more expensive than Amazon for a 2TB.

I'm waiting on HP doing cashback again so I can get a 2nd microserver seems all the cheap boxes have stopped

I've a really bad run with Seagate 7200.11's both personally and via work. However, I run a 4 drive raid of ST2000s in my 24 bay server, 1 of them is a few weeks old whilst the other 3 have a good few years under their belts now. No issues at all thankfully.

Whilst heat and such can help swing the odds I honestly think other factors such as vibration and untimely movement play a bigger factor with these modern drives.

I am however steadily gravitating over to HGST. I've got a 2.5" 1tb part in my mac mini that gets flogged literally 25/7/365 and thus far has lapped it up despite being crammed in that tiny chassis alongside an SSD. My Deskstar NAS array is also flying the flag high at the moment at least

Drive replaced, restoring backup is on going, done 19% so might be done by midnight.

It should do till I decide what to do when I'm out of space again, only 700-800gb left.
