I was like you 10-15 years ago.
But a lot of us got older, got more responsibilities and less time and more money.
So 2003ish when it rained/snowed motorbike! Each time everytime... that's because all I had was a motorbike.
2015 I've got 2 cars and a motorbike. It rains I think meh and get into the car.
The licensing laws also killed off the younger riders from entering. As a full licence is a ball ache compared to when we did it. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. What's gone so wrong with the biking world in the UK? |
Haven't you seen me? I ride a Fazer 1000, on which I have covered 6000 miles since 21st June when I first rode this particular one. I haven't seen you though. Where have you been?
I've been riding since 1985, except for a few short periods when I couldn't afford my own wheels. I haven't seen you in all that time. Where have you been?
Is it just a case of poor obs? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

A few days rain does wonder for clearing the roads - of fair-weather bikers and Rossi wannabes. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I didn't pass my car test until I was 39 in 2008, but have had a company car since then. I got rid of my winter hack (VFR750) as I no longer needed it.
My commute is only 4 miles, so it's pointless unchaining the bike, getting it out of the garage and putting my gear on for a short ride, especially if it's going to get ruined by salt in winter. It's easier to use the 320d or cycle and keep the bike for touring and weekend fun |

Exactly my philosophy. Why go out on the bike if you know it's going to piss down, given the option of a car and staying dry? What is the pleasure in going out on the bike in pissing rain?
But if I've committed to a ride where others are involved, I'm not going to mess them about by suddenly not turning up, unless we have all agreed that rain stops play.
I think I would have to describe myself as a fair weather rider these days (despite a thorough soaking on the way home from Wales the other day ), although that never used to be the case. But when I'm in a position of being able to afford either a car or a bike, not both, the bike will win every time. Just fortunate enough to be able to afford both at the moment. And fortunate that I don't have a commute to do every day too. This may all change in the future though. If a bike is all I've got, and I have to commute, so be it, but I wouldn't choose it when a 'better' option is available.
I don't think the OP has really given much thought to the fact that everybody's circumstances are different, and indeed, can change, before he posted this question. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Or like me he could be commuting around motorways every day. M40/M25/A1M, my journeys about 35 mile per direction. 700 mile a week in commute alone ignoring couple of hours most Sundays for leisure riding. 6000 mile in a couple of months, and by the look of the pics you post you have a lot more fun than I do! |
No commutes, just riding for pleasure - another philosophy of mine: do it while you can! ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
