Will rattling chain damage other components

My chain has a few tight links and makes a terrible rattling sound. I had it booked in this weekend for the chain and sprockets to be replaced, as well as a service and new tyres. The chain and sprockets were not replaced as they didn't have the parts yet, so now I have to wait a week for it I be changed.

Will it be ok to ride during this time? It has got louder since riding the bike like this so am I at risk of damaging other components if I continue to ride it?

Try rubbing loads of EP90 into it with a nail brush, you might find the problem's just a lack of lubrication over time.

You're at risk of chain failure, which means and immediate off and damage to plastics etc. I'd not ride it, myself.

ride a mile or so to warm the bike,

get some 3 in 1 oil and give the chain a good scrub with a toothbrush dipped in it

wipe the chain down

ride round the block

repeat with 10/40w engine oil

should find it eases up a bit, my chain stiffens up over christmas when it's got a load of snow / grit / rain thrown at it and then sits for a week - doing this sorts it.

Something to be careful of with chains with tight spots...when adjusting the tension, make sure the chain is not slack, it needs to be at it's tightest. Otherwise, if you set it slack, when the tight spot comes up it can put too much strain on the drive shaft bearing and/or back wheel bearing.

Your biggest risk of mechanical damage, outside of crashing the bike, is that the chain will snap and bunch up in front of the front sprocket, punch a hole in the crank case. This will mean a new engine and believe me it DOES happen.

You don't want to be behind when they come off either...I've seen that, I've had one fly past my head, not knowing what it was 'till my mate pulled over
Not many soft links a while back either, a lot of chains flew off because the split link had been over used or not put on right.
Given the choice, I'll go for a shaft drive...no doubt. That doesn't mean I'd go for a shaft drive bike, just if I could choose which drive on any particular bike. Chains are like something from the steam age now ....dirty, noisy, they "flap" about

I couldn't resist a ride today because the weather was so good, but I'm going to not ride it until I get it replaced after hearing what could happen haha

I only got the bike a month back and the chain was like this when I got it so I don't know what it's been through. I'll just wait but damn I'm looking forward to it being changed so the noise goes and to see if anything else feels different. It's my first bike you see

I like belts, I pondered converting a chain driven bike to belt using a GPZ305 rear wheel......... but didn't get very far
