PostPosted: 22:05 - 09 Oct 2015    Post subject: Yamaha WR125X 2010 only getting 60MPH with big bore kit Reply with quote

Hello everyone im glad to part of this forum.
I recently bought a Yamaha WR125X 2010 with 21K on the clock and it has the athena big bore kit making 182cc and a after market exhaust all pre fitted when purchased.
Now the bike only reaches 60mph at the rev limiter.

Has anybody got any idea what this could be?
Perhaps sprocket ratio? carb jetting?
Bike starts first and every time and seems to have no pull in it
Any help would be much appreciated

My mate had a 125cc chinese bike that would only reach 45-50mph. Felt like it was gonna die when the rev limiter kicked in. Turned out to be the carb setup wrong.

To rule out gear ratio, count the teeth on both sprockets and compare to original spec, but as you say there is no pull in it in low revs it kinda nulls this one out.

Your engine is revving as high as it can and thus going as fast as it can. Try going up a tooth or 2 on the front sprocket but you lose acceleration in the process of gaining a little speed.

Sounds like you need to investigate the carburettor setup, but I wouldn't expect anything fantastic from 180cc.

I bet there is and there will be another guy that can blow smoke out of his bum. Speedos read in Kmph as well as Mph Wink
If you are hitting a real rev limiter (stupid thing to put on a bike IMHO) then no matter what you do to the carb will make it rev any higher.

I doubt that myself since the YBR250 tops at 90mph and the CBR250RR only manages 115.

182cc making what...17/18hp?

You'll see 85 maybe 90 absolutely smashing it down a hill before having a molten lump.

Would suspect it's not the rev limiter he's reffering to, more describing a problem as one perhaps? As standard these bikes usually pull to around 70mph...80mph downhill. Obviously I could be wrong and he may have messed about with the gearing.

WR125's were EFI from memory, sharing the engine with the YZF-R125 so you may suceed in creating more issues trying to tune or clean the 'carb' if it doesn't have one. Air fuel mix would all be controlled by the ECU, though I suppose you might check adjustment of the throttle cable to ensure the butterfly is actually opening all the way.

My moneys on incorrect fitting of the big bore kit...badly fitted rings, leaky head gasket, cam timing slightly out. Something like that. Probbably was sold to you as they knew it was bollocksed - the 180cc kit and performance pipes for these aren't cheap parts. Assuming again that the sprockets haven't been messed about with.

This is all assuming it's run like this from day one?

Think of it like the gears on your mountain bike, if it top gear you are only doing 60mph that is like being on you mountain bike in the lowest gear you'll peddle like mad but go go very fast. what size sprockets are on it?

these 125cc sumo type bikes are designed to already be at their optimum, so its very difficult to squeeze any more power out of them.... The short answer is no

The bike should of been upjetted because with a bigger cylinder it now needs more fuel to get the combustion ratio right with the air... Has this been done?
