Guys and girls, what's the deal with this? I filtered past a van today at a crossing when the light was red. I went slowly up the outside of him and stopped. As I moved away he did as well and tried to stay level with me to intimidate me into backing off. I didn't. I suspect that he saw the 125 and an L plate and thought he was dealing with a kid that wouldn't bite back rather than a middle aged man that does. He was a skinhead guy with tattoos but didn't argue much when I stepped off the bike and went to his window. His argument was that he can't go past cars like that in his van.

What are the legalities of filtering in these situations? Sorry for the noob question, I've looked but advice is contradictory.

For zig-zag marked junctions the legality is that you cannot overtake the lead vehicle if it is moving, or if the crossing is in use.
As for dealing with 'blockers', don't get off and start a row, filter away, leave them fuming and get on with your life.

Right. There were indeed zigzag markings. He was the lead vehicle but was stationary and the crossing was in use. I should technically have sat behind him then.

Not that he knew that though, he just objected to being passed. I need to master the art of giving no fcks.

I actually have it on video from my camera, if it's not to incriminating I'll throw it up although as above I was obviously in the wrong.

If you tried to overtake him there, it's incriminating.

Quote:

28.—(1) Without prejudice to regulation 27, a zig-zag line shall convey the requirement that, whilst any motor vehicle (in this regulation called “the approaching vehicle”) or any part of it is within the limits of a controlled area and is proceeding towards the signal-controlled crossing facility to which the controlled area relates, the driver of the vehicle shall not cause it or any part of it—

(a)to pass ahead of the foremost part of any other motor vehicle proceeding in the same direction; or

(b)to pass ahead of the foremost part of a vehicle which is stationary for the purpose of complying with the indication given by a traffic light signal for controlling vehicular traffic.

You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.

No "passing ahead of" any moving motor vehicle.

No "passing ahead of" the nearest stationary vehicle to the crossing (including a pushbike, "motor" not being specified) if the lights are red / a zebra crossing is in use.

There's a hair to be split over exactly what "pass ahead of" means, and whether there's a magic moment when you can blow past a stationary vehicle before it starts moving the instant that the light changes to green or Doris gets off the crossing.

From a practical point of view, having witnessed the suicidal inability many pedestrians have to master a crossing I'd say stay put and let the other vehicle risk getting fined and/or killing someone.

On the upside, I've learnt something else today and nobody died, that's what it's all about.

what if the crossing is a red light, with ziggy zagz, but you filter and stop at the leading drivers door (so not actually in front) but then as the lights change (and noone is crossing) you finish the over take? is that illegal?

That's the magic moment I mentioned.

If the lights have actually gone green, and the other vehicle is still stationary, and you can get past before they start moving, then it's OK.

For that to happen they're either facebooking or have died at the wheel.

I stopped in front of him, got off the bike and told him exactly what I thought. There was traffic coming the other way so I didn't fancy unbalancing myself.

I was joking... probably not a good idea to pick fights with vans Laughing

Feel free not to be intimidated when you're surrounded by a protective cage of metal. Otherwise, backing off seems the most sensible thing to do.

Also an offence.

C'mon then, fight me.

What's the point in filtering past traffic if you then stop and get on your soap box?

Yes, fair point. Have you never stopped to voice your disapproval at the actions of other road users though?

Eh? Not where I live guv'nor. I draw level with the lead vehicle when the light is red, and having cunningly anticipated the amber light I zip off the instant it shows, ideally without putting a foot down. It's stretching the rules a bit, but that's what bikes are for. And the driver has no opportunity to make his displeasure known to me. If he does get the chance I ignore him and carry on doing all the bikey things he objects to as if he doesn't exist. That's what really pisses them off - being ignored and insignificant.

Tut Tut Tut Tut Tut Tut
If you're gonna go on red/amber you might as well just go on red. They mean the same thing.
