Yamaha YZF r125 - Petrol Smell

Hi, I have recently gotten myself a 2011 Yamaha r125 (2010 bike) It was stored in the house until it was insured and the room always smelt of petrol after a night of the door closed. The bike was never started and it was coming from the Yamaha. Its now in the garage and its the same story with it being stored overnight and there being a smell of petrol in the air.

Im wondering if anyone knows what it could be? Im giving the bike a service tomorrow night so does anyone know anything i should take a look at?

Have a look around for any obvious leaks, if there are none it's probably normal.

I've only owned 2 bikes and both of them make the room stink of petrol when I've had them indoors.

Worse when I stick them straight inside after being out.

Residual heat from the engine/ambient heat from the room making the petrol vapourise faster than normal through the breather.

Have you noticed high consumption? (Maybe not if still 'new' to you.)

You can try the old army trick of parking it on top of a big bit of paper/cardboard.

You can even use the box your Cheerios come in. Cut it and open and lay it 'coloured side' towards the floor. If there are any significant leaks they will be glaringly obvious in the morning. Spotting/Puddle/s on the clean paper/card. If dripping wet from the road that will need to be considered too.

As suggested the breather is constantly open to atmosphere and cold petrol will vap out fumes when it gets heated. (The inside of the room/shed/garage will be warm enough to provide that heat.

Another concern is that if you can smell petrol then perhaps the ventilation is inadequate and needs to be improved. If no ventilation then dampness is encouraged and all the problems that involves.

Try the above for checking out leaks just in case but, there's probably nothing to worry about tbh.

Also, don't worry when you're riding in the rain and start to get a funny burning smell and some vapour rising up at the front of the bike, it's normal. Although, it did have me concerned at first but, both of my R125s have done it and I'm close to 30,000 miles on the second one, with it still running fine.

EDIT: If you do find that it's got a leak, checking the fuel hoses would be the first thing I'd be looking at.

EDIT 2: Don't light a ciggie in the room/garage if it smells strongly of petrol.

Had a look at the tank and took out the fuel sender/ fuel pump and the seal seems great. I didnt remove the whole tank to look under it because i had just put fuel in the tank and i didn't want a mess. My dad found me a good deal on a new fuel tank for and Sender/pump so i will replace that soon. Its got a different part number so it might be a better design? I've heard that some R125s got recalled because of fuel tanks.

Don't know the bike in particular, but is the fuel system gravity fed? If so there's probably a fuel tap that you're supposed to turn off when the bike's not in use.

There's no fuel tap, its a fuel injected bike with a fuel pump.

There were apparently some faulty fuel pumps, but as far as I'm aware they just stopped pumping, they didn't leak.

Guys if you are still experiencing gas (fuel) smell I found the solution to it on my Yamaha XT660Z Tenere 2009. It got very bad about 3 weeks ago so I removed all bolts from fuel cap and found 4 small springs under the rubber seal. Make sure you put rag over the fuel tank neck so you don't drop anything inside before you start removing anything. I extended those 4 springs by about 5mm by pressing flat head screw driver in between the spirals of the springs. Put them back in and it solved it all. No more gas smell. Those springs get weaker with age and there is not enough pressure for the rubber seal to seal the fuel tank entry. Good luck with this and don't inhale fuel vapour if you don't have to. Stay safe.
