So, I'm getting hold of a Kawasaki KLX250 (90's model) and it's an unregistered off-road bike.

I'd like to get it registered so I can use it on the road and, after a search on here, I'm wondering if that's achievable.

With a seat height of 855mm and a ground clearance under 290mm it doesn't qualify as an enduro bike (900mm/310mm) so how easy is it to get it on the road?

Does it need an MSVA inspection, and therefore lights, mirrors, indicators, etc., or is it possible to raise the ground clearance and seat height to conform to the enduro spec?

Anyone done it before?

I presume it has legitimate frame numbers?
Are you sure it's never been registered?

A KLX250 should have type approval I'd have thought.

If it was an unregistered enduro bike, just stiffening up the suspension should do the trick, maybe along with a chunky 'seat cover' - I reckon I can get a pit bike through like this, so sure a KLX250 should be fine!

I'm sure it's got no lights fitted and no switchgear, but beyond that I don't know much. Hopefully it's arriving Sunday, so I'll know more then, but I doubt there's any paperwork at all.

If it has type approval that means it should be quite straightforward to get a model year from Kawasaki and register it, no?

I wasn't sure if it had to be natively over 900mm seat height or whether you could just stick a longer shock in, etc. to lift everything up a bit.

Cheers, G.

I suspect you will find it is/was road registered previously and quite possibly is/was stolen. Check the numbers. I can hpi the frame number which will tell you if its been registered previously and if so if it has been stolen/written off/scrapped, this costs £20.

Alternatively you can risk it and try registering it as is but it may get taken off you. You will need a v55/5 form, an Mot, dating certificate (motorbikeregistrations.co.uk are good) and a letter from hm customs to show no import duty is owed.

I don't believe it's ever been road registered but I wouldn't be completely amazed if it turned out to be stolen - so many are, after all.

Time will tell, I guess. Can you even hpi check vehicles that have never been registered?

Possible, but pretty unlikely for a klx I'd say.

By the way, when I say I wouldn't be amazed if it was stolen I don't mean recently. I know the guy who has it now and I know when and where he got it but, being nigh on 20 years old, I'd be amazed if its history has always been totally legit.

I guess I'll find out. Luckily I'm only giving £80 for it.

There are probably considerably easier/cheaper ways to get charged with handling stolen goods?

If you can be 100% sure the person you're getting it off would definitely have properly checked it out when they got it, sure, maybe.

I can hpi check any frame/chassis number, if it has been recorded stolen it will show up. If not then your all good to register it.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll give it a miss. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see what, if any, paperwork there is.

Thanks, folks.
