Recommend a turn based strategy game?

I upgraded to Windows 10.

Cannot get Civ 4 beyond the sword to work anymore.

Hate Civ 5.

Can anyone recommend some turn based strategy games? War gaming ideally, but doesn't have to be. Must be turn based, I'm all fingers and thumbs with the mouse clicks otherwise.

Tried looking in the windows store, but all the games seem to be far too fluffy and cutesey, and on my phone, the games seem to be this, or just micro transaction money spinners.

yeah, I have, and I've tried reading through the endless threads on civ fanatics, some people seem to have managed it, but with an awful lot of faffing, I just can't get it to work.

I used to play the Disciples series a lot before i discovered RTS. Don't know if they're still making those though!

Slightly left field and probably not what you are envisaging, but what about XCOM? It won GotY and is turn based, well worth a play through.

What's your beef with Civ5? I've played Civ2-5 and liked them all. The new space one I didn't get on with mind.

You could try any of the Combat Mission 2x titles; Normandy, Fortress Italy, Red Thunder or Black Sea. Company to battalion level combat, with squads and individual vehicles. Think Men of War with a squad AI that works. Can be played real time or wego turn based. The latter is more cool as it allows you to review and play back the last turn from any angle you want, as many times as you want, to watch that squad get taken out by the sniper, MG or vehicle you didn't expect, or watch a tank get taken out by the bazooka or javelin team. Spotting, observation and recon are key. Just because your squad on one part of the map have spotted that hidden ATGM team, your vehicle elsewhere will not be able to react unless it has spotted it. Artillery support has command delays and uses spotting rounds. If you try COH/RTS style tactics you will lose pixeltruppen in droves, and you can't simply buy more.

The graphics are far from cutting edge, but there are plenty of mods to make it look prettier to your taste, eg cropped screenshot below*. It's OpenGL tho, so loading times with a bundle of sizable mods and graphics on best will be unbearably bad on AMD Radeon series(literally 5 minutes vs 55 seconds on an Nvidia card). They're very alt-tab friendly tho, so you can browse while loading then alt-tab back.

Here's a youtube video of one of the devs playing through a Black Sea scenario. His youtube channel and Twitch streams have plenty of playthroughs of vanilla and user made scenarios and campaigns, using the default graphics.

Niche title, expensive compared to mainstream games, not as graphically beautiful and has it's quirks.

*Yes it uses AA, the War Movie shader mod used to take that shot disables it, a simple Alt-M brings AA back.
