PostPosted: 00:27 - 05 Dec 2015    Post subject: Portuguese licence Reply with quote

Hey guys,
This is my first post here!

I'm not a biker (yet!), I have a Portuguese car license and I'm considering getting the motorcycle license in the UK.

Now my question is: should I start the license as if I didn't have any license, do all theory, etc, or convert my Portuguese license to a British one and then get the motorcycle license. This second option might be easier if getting a motorcycle license already having the car one is quicker.

Please let me know what you think as I'm not familiar with the way this works in the uk.

Thanks!

From memory - Google for details of each step.

1. Obtain a UK licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement (category A).
2. CBT.
3. Pass theory test.
4. Pass module 1 & 2.
5. Your Portuguese B licence is exchanged to A+B UK one.

Things to note:
1. existing B licence makes no difference to the time/process of getting A.
2. prepare to argue with car insurers. You will end up having a UK licence since passing your bike test with car entitlement backdated to whenever you got your Portuguese car licence. Next time you renew your car insurance you will spend hours explaining that, for example, 2015-1999=16 and not 3.

Thanks cdlxxvi, if it takes the same effort to get category A with out without B, why wouldn't I keep my Portuguese license for B and get the A by itself?

The advantage I see with that is I only have to renew my PT car license in about 30 years..
There might be other advantages I'm not thinking about right now too.

One thing I have been told, my mates wife is German, drives on her German license and the insurance is considerably higher than what she would be charges with an British license.

I didn't notice much difference in the premium following the change from EU to UK licence, but true, some insurers only accept UK licence holders.

Considering the hassle I have every year with the car insurance, given a choice now I would attempt what OP is planning (keep my EU B licence and obtain a UK A-only). Every year since I got my licence exchanged it takes multiple calls and emails before the insurers' tiny brains comprehend the dates printed on my licence.

Portugal is part of the EU, so your current licence will be an EU licence.

A licence issued in the UK is also an EU licence, hence some of the silliness in the bike test that makes more sense in Europe than it does here.

Quote:
Is it possible to have two driving licences issued by two different EU countries at the same time?

NO — nobody is allowed to hold more than one driving licence – not even if your driving licence has been withdrawn, you cannot be issued a second driving licence by another EU country.

By the letter of the law you should exchange your current licence for a UK licence with class A provisional entitlement, your new UK issued licence will retain your current class B entitlement.

Regardless you will still need to complete a theory and CBT before getting your leg over big bike training.

Some training venues will arrange a CBT as your first riding day if you dont already hold one.

However Swansea are often known to be able to find their arse with both hands.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi

Also possible the DVLA will screw up your licence groups. Probably won't screw up and lose your car entitlement (and if they do should be easy enough to fix), but some chance they screw up and give you full motorcycle entitlement Laughing

All the best

Katy

Hi. I am also a biker wanna be and I believe it's better to not open a new thread.
My EU B licence was changed in UK one and DVLA give me AM cat with 122 code and A with 79(3) code.
So, I can ride a bike now or I have to pass CBT test?
I want an 125cc for starting Smile

You should have provisional entitlement, which means you need a CBT to ride a 125

You aren't suppose to have two licences, but then if you were to just apply for a UK provisional and then do your bike test, I don't think the DVLA are going to go to their Portuguese equivalents and ask 'oh does Mr .... currently hold a licence with you"

They probably wouldn't, but then I might have issues with car insurance, they would have access to the UK bike license that would be missing the car category...
