Seeing as Chaly is very nearly finished, with only a wiring loom to make.
I decided to have a browse for another track bike for 2016.
Spotted an original Thumpstar for sale in the free ads. These were the best pit bikes in their day. Best built by far! Every spacer, and every bearing fits just how it should. Id say they are as well built as a lot of the Genuine Hondas.
This one is a 2002 model, so it's 13 years old!
The 120cc engine is not much use to me for a Supermoto, so I've decided to convert it to Semi-Auto and eventually swap it into the Chaly.
Electric start, and 4 speed box mean it will be a nice fast, reliable road engine.
Forks, wheels and rear shock, I have sold to a friend. That has clawed back some of what the bike owes me, leaving me with a Frame and Swing arm that I was after.
The frame is very similar in size to a Honda CRF50 frame. I think they measure up as a +2. Slightly more leg room for an adult.
Swing arm, is one of my favorites. Without going and spending £300 on a billetware / Fast-50s / Red Baron / Five-0 item. The Thumpstar swing arm is as close as you can get I think. Nice and chunky, but not too long, keeping the wheel base nice and short for track.
So here is the little beast:

https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/12247095_177131712637862_6050486203290766756_n.jpg?oh=272059e9131184aeca2fa624e8418a66&oe=56F1D5A4
Plastics off, to reveal a nice adjustable rear shock, and Mikuni VM22 carb.
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/12249663_177169955967371_8540978438477520569_n.jpg?oh=8c1180e00bb67ce695c3c87cf663ce12&oe=56BB013F
Annnnnd. Finally what I wanted to get to. A frame, ready for the powder coaters.
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/12239873_177251642625869_4183623004062708307_n.jpg?oh=1de0567297870b3f86d3925f24568426&oe=56AF5E53
This one wont be going pink. I assure you that.
I'm feeling either silver (Alloy wheel silver), or white.
It depends on what colour plastics/graphics I go for. Blue or Red.
So the goal:
I'm going for something in between these two:
My old CRF50. Which was on an FYM Xsport frame (+1 size), and Genuine Thumpstar Swing arm.
This was running Honda CRF50 forks, with +1 Red Baron springs and HD legs. It was also running a 250mm FastAce rear shock.
It's about the perfect geometry I think:
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/v/t1.0-9/12140598_158587421158958_2847963827735851265_n.jpg?oh=cb63ca891e04bb0f19cd618f2ace99b6&oe=56F81CC5
And then my old MonsterMoto Mk1. +1 size frame, and the Monster Moto Gull arm (Rare as rocking horse shite now!)
This was running a set of shortened forks, and a shortened rear shock, at just 245mm.
It was so dialed in, I regret selling it. Doh!
It was running a Zongchen 155ho engine. Proper power house!
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10984495_176454869372213_6283902646827229293_n.jpg?oh=fccee155b5eeac6568a9ed0617027f1c&oe=56F388F0
I'm debating whether to run the new bike in then standard 140 class, or go for one of the open classes.
Im drawn more towards the standard 140 class, and I'm tempted to run a set of Honda forks with +1 internals again. Granted, they are just springer forks, but with a steering damper mounted vertically on one of the legs, you can get half decent feel out of them. With the added bonus, they weigh fuck all. Keeping the bike light gives an advantage over the bigger mid-sized bikes, because realistically that's the only way you're going to stay in front. The mid-size bikes are so much more stable on the fast corners. ____________________ - Honda XL125S - CBR400 NC29 - VFR400 NC30 - CBR400 NC29 - TL1000R - TeeZeR Pit! - Bandit 12 - YZF450 - LuckyMX125 Pit! - Demon X XLR 140 Pit!

Very nice, when you prep it for racing, could you get pictures of like the catch cans and other bits and pieces like that, because I'm not sure what to do.
I want to get mine track ready, but I'm confused as to what needs doing because the rules I've found don't seem very concise, and it's still just a plan in the making at the moment. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

Track day prep, and race day prep are completely different.
To participate in a track day at somewhere like Stretton 2000. You literally need a quiet(ish) exhaust, and supermoto tyres. They like you to have the usual bits like hand guards and bobbins, but they dont really enforce it.
Whilton Mill are a little more strict as they are an international Kart race circuit. You need a catch tray (Some people just cut the bottom of a 5L petrol can off and cable tie it to their bash plate).
You will also need peg bobbins, axle bobbins, carb over flow bottle (or just route it into the catch tray), you'll need a quiet exhaust, and a working kill switch.
Things like lock wired sump are only really important when racing.
But, it's never a bad thing to have all the race prep.
Will take photos every step of the way. ____________________ - Honda XL125S - CBR400 NC29 - VFR400 NC30 - CBR400 NC29 - TL1000R - TeeZeR Pit! - Bandit 12 - YZF450 - LuckyMX125 Pit! - Demon X XLR 140 Pit!

Interesting project thread as always!
I love where the 120cc engine is heading for, (perfect finishing touch).
But I have to say all this talk of race Supermoto pit bikes, (though I can appreciate a fine chassis and spec) leaves me really cold.
All I want to see, hear, feel and smell is the little Alitalia/Malaguti king of the 13" wheel power house project! PLEASE MOAR! |

I kinda should soldier on with the Rotax pit bike. But it's a dead ender at the moment because it wont classify for racing.
I was so close to just buying a KLX pit bike frame and a 160 engine. Looting the forks, wheels and swing arm off the 2 stroke, and selling the engine...
But I changed my mind.
I've bought a couple of 10" scooter wheels which I am going to look into converting for the bike. Benefits are running tubeless, and no maintenance. But down side is they are a bit heavier than pit bike wheels.
Undecided on forks yet. ____________________ - Honda XL125S - CBR400 NC29 - VFR400 NC30 - CBR400 NC29 - TL1000R - TeeZeR Pit! - Bandit 12 - YZF450 - LuckyMX125 Pit! - Demon X XLR 140 Pit!

Don't batter the smoker, that is a thing of beauty.
Thanks, binge, if I were going to do it, I'd do everything, lock wire, sliders, the works, that way it would be ready for any track I went to, I'm not one for racing, I'm not competitive enough but enjoy a good track practise session. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

You planning to race with (what's now) National Minibikes?
You could always see if you could run the 2 stroke in a Nora-sport (full size) SM class . |

I think I will sit on the smoker for a while longer. See how I feel.
I guess it'll never lose value as it's got a Rotax 123 in it.
Regarding racing. I will probably do a few track days / weekenders at Stretton/Whilton/Redlodge for a bit, see how I get on.
Might enter a few rounds of the NMRRC. I used to ride with all the lads who enter, before the series came about. A real great bunch of people, and some true friends were made from Pit bike supermoto. It's probably the main reason I'm getting back into it. Great memories were made.
Regarding Nora-sport and the 2 stroke pitty.
I dont think that'll happen G.
I value my life. And those boys are fucking epic GODs among Men. I've seen them on their 450F motos. I would actually die before the first corner!
Found some clip from Stretton when I had the TZR Pit bike. Guy filming is Mart. He's one of the leading riders. He was merely tickling his bike following me.

Fun being the key word really.
The mini pits are hard to ride, they're a challenge and they are a hell of a lot faster as they weigh about 2/3 as much as a midsized.
Once you get into the 12" wheels, DNM forks etc, you are knocking on for full size supermoto money. May as well just take the leap and get a big bike.
Again, that's just my opinion. ____________________ - Honda XL125S - CBR400 NC29 - VFR400 NC30 - CBR400 NC29 - TL1000R - TeeZeR Pit! - Bandit 12 - YZF450 - LuckyMX125 Pit! - Demon X XLR 140 Pit!

Bit of a side note.
I dragged this old girl out of the garage today, just to have a sit on it, and remind myself how fucking epic it is gonna be when finished.
It's got a Showa rear shock on it, which I was trying to take apart last year, and it ping off in two, letting a load of oil out.
I tried to get it all back in. it seems to be dampening enough, but it's got no compression really, it's a bit soft. Are these nitrogen charged? It's got a valve on the underside of the piggy pack cylinder.

Could you not chop out the brace bar though, and maybe make a thinner pair of tubes to go across above and below the run of the chain, and get them welded to the frame?
Does the swing arm spindle pass through the back of the engine as well? If so that should give some support and bracing anyway. If not then could you maybe make up a rigid pair of engine mounting plates that also bolt to the frame and that the swing arm spindle can pass through too?
Hard to see the clearance issues from this angle, but it's definitely solvable one way or another.
As for the shock, I don't know much about those Showa units, but there's a good suspension specialist down the road from me that would probably be able to rebuild it for you and sort the damping to suit the bike/rider.

So this nice comfey seat turned up today. I do love a branded seat on the Mini Pits. Looks so much better than a Chinese shitter.
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xla1/v/t1.0-9/12376451_196178427399857_3500447820740826704_n.jpg?oh=dc1b97dc7465b982814b3c73e241887a&oe=571F3AE8
And then my DNM Hornets turned up. Super plush forks!
In the 7 years of having pit bikes, I've never had a decent, branded set of adjustable forks. I've always been the one to whack a couple of spacers inside, on top of the springs, and change out the oil for some 10w40 engine oil, to slow them right down. Let my tyre pressures down to 10psi, and just fucking go for it.
This'll be the first season I ride with a bike that is tunable trackside. heh.
Might hate it.

And then a friend cut me a couple of these off and dropped them round today.
My Grandad, AKA, The Norton King, is coming down from Leeds with my Grandma tomorrow for Christmas.
Will ask him nicely to take these back up with him, and work his magic on them. They will hopefully become a couple of sprocket carriers to have welded onto my scooter wheels.

I've started fitting the front wheel up into the forks.
Looks like I am going to struggle getting a caliper on that disc. Looks like there are only 2 options for me...
Cut the posts down on the fork leg, and re-drill closer, to allow a caliper to fit over the current disc.
Or try to get a bigger disc.

Well I've just come across this fucking awesome kit!
230mm disc! Emailed the seller to see if he will do the discs on their own.
He also does 210mm set ups, so gotta see which I'd prefer. 230mm is pimp! But not sure if it's necessary.
They are the same as my wheels, so both will defo fit (Y)
